Obituary of Joseph P. Cormier

CORMIER, Joseph -age 94 of Shubenacadie passed away peacefully on July 6, 2017 at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, Halifax. Born in Belle Cote, Inverness County, he was a son of the late John and Mary Ann (Doucet) Cormier. As a young man, Joe enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and saw active duty on the mine sweeper HMCS Bayfield during the Second World War. He started off his career working for the National Gypsum in Dingwall, moving to Milford in the early 1950’s. He and wife Lucy settled in Shubenacadie and together they raised their nine boys. Joseph was a self-employed electrician, establishing Cormier and Sons Electric. His hobbies were fishing and collecting antiques. He was a long-standing member of the St. Bridget’s Parish and a 58 year member of the Shubenacadie Royal Canadian Legion. He is survived by the love of his life Lucy (Maillet); sons, Lionel, Arthur (Colleen), Emile, Cecil, Gerald (Armeli), Jojo (Karen), Robert, Victor (Ellen) and Richard (Lisa); grandchildren, Alana, Bradley, Shawn, Mandy, Josiah, Aimee, Rebekah, Nicole, Alexander, Kaleigh and Mary; great grandchildren, Riley, Jack and Addie. He was predeceased by sister Jeannette Brodie and brothers Edward and Victor. A Legion Memorial Service will be held at 2pm Sunday, July 9, followed by a visitation until 4pm in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie. Funeral service will be held 11am Monday, July 10 in St. Bridget’s Roman Catholic Church, Shubenacadie, Father Phil Thibodeau officiating. Interment will follow in St. Bridget’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joe may be made to St. Bridget’s Parish or the Royal Canadian Legion, Shubenacadie, Branch 111. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of V4 Westwood for the care and compassion shown to Joe during his stay.
