To Ethel's family:
My thoughts and prayers are with you, at this challenging time.
Ethel was a gracious, lovely lady, who I met during her years at Government House, when I was a volunteer with The Nova Scotia Division of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Canada Program. She and Walter were absolutely integral to the running of the House when they were there, and it was a joy to be greeted by each of them, the several times I had the privilege of being in the House for Award Presentation Ceremonies, and other events. Ethel's attention to detail was incredible, and she made sure the House was always looking its very best for all who entered, visited, or resided there. She was so humble about her many talents. I remember one morning when (then) HRH Prince Edward was about to arrive for a visit, she was worried about about how the flower arrangements looked. She wanted everything to be beautiful, and just right, for his Visit. Her worry was, of course, unwarranted, as (as always) the arrangements, which she had done herself, were all breathtakingly beautiful. It took some persuading to convince her, though - she was so incredibly humble. And everything else was absolutely ready for the visit too ( also, as always) - because of her unrelenting dedication to her work. She was unfailingly devoted to her employment, always went "above and beyond" to make anyone in the House comfortable - and very well looked after. She was a very special, "one of a kind"- person - and a very wonderful kind, at that. She IS missed, and WILL be remembered, by SO many. Please take comfort in the memories of her that you hold close, in your hearts. Carole Thompson, Past President, NS Division, Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Canada.

Aunt Ethel, you will be sadly missed. The road trips to Meaghers Grant with you, Walter and Barney, the weekend sleep overs at Government house, going to the Ice Capades together, breaking my arm at Nannie's and let us never forget the laughing box, these are just a few of the memories of us together that I will talk about for years and never forget. My condolences to my mother Florence, my aunts and uncles. Love Bev, Derek and Ashley.

I worked at the World Trade and Convention Centre for many years and had the pleasure of working with Ethel at many events which we were called upon to cater at Government House. After being met at the door by Walter, Ethel worked with us the entire time we were there to assist us in any way possible. I will always remember Ethel's quiet dedication to service to Government House.
My Sincere Condolences to Ethel's Family

I looked after RCMP security teams when they were required at Gov't House. Ethel & Walter always welcomed us and made our team feel so much at home. While Walter was on guard and sat on his stool just inside the kitchen door, Ethel would be making our officers cookies, with coffee and tea. She was always so gracious and so nice to be around. She will be missed. My condolences on your loss.

During visits to Government House over the decades, Ethel, with Walter, was a constant fixture, always assuring that, first, the Governor's tea was served to his or her liking, and then ours. She would shyly but proudly wear the Honours that came her way, self-effacing but proud in her loyalty, especially the Royal Victorian Medal, which lies in the personal gift of The Queen. A life of dutiful service, spent in one occupation, is a rarity nowadays. But Ethel personified that sense of commitment and loyalty in her own mien at Government House. All of us are the better for having known her.
