HIRTLE, James Douglas, age 84, of Shubenacadie, passed away peacefully in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, on Thursday September 8, 2016. Born in Carrolls Corner, he was a son of the late James and Mable (McKenna) Hirtle. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Valerie (McLellan), Shubenacadie; sons, Ron (Denise) Hirtle, Clayton Park; Norman Hirtle (Deborah Bannister), Truro; daughters, Joanne Hirtle (Earl Caldwell), Fort Ellis; Lisa Hirtle (Peter Wolfe), Liverpool; Jennifer Hirtle, Debert; sister, Freda (Brian) Smith; brothers, Eric (Bonnie) Hirtle and Raymond Hirtle; 6 grandsons, 1 granddaughter, 1 great granddaughter, 2 step granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 3 brothers and 5 sisters. He worked at Nova Scotia Sand and Gravel for 33 years. In his early years he enjoyed fishing and hunting. Visitation 4-7pm Sunday, September 11th in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie with funeral service 2pm, Monday, September 12, 2016, in Gays River United Church, Lori Crocker, DM officiating, with a reception to follow. Interment in the Gays River Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Gays River United Church.
