Obituary of Elsie Dorothy Whidden

Whidden, Elsie Dorothy On April 7, 2016 Elsie Dorothy Whidden (nee Cox), 87, passed away peacefully at the Whitehills Long Term Care Centre, Hammonds Plains, NS. Born on September 22, 1928 in Myers Point, Head of Jeddore, NS, she was the second of four children of Samuel and Florence (Myers) Cox. She provided child care in Musquodoboit and Halifax before moving to Enfield, NS at the age of 16. It was while working at Silver’s Store in Enfield that she met Roy “Gordon” Whidden of Oldham, NS. Elsie and Gordon were married on June 17, 1948 and had 3 children. Their first years together were spent pinching pennies but they were eventually able to turn their unfinished 2 room house in Oldham into a cozy home that Elsie was especially proud of. Elsie was known for her baking and cooking – the door was always open at the Whidden’s where everyone had a place at the table. She was also known for her knitting which was a favourite hobby of hers until arthritis robbed her of this pastime. After Gordon’s death in 2004, Elsie stayed at her little Oldham home until early 2013 when health issues forced her to move to Whitehills. Elsie is survived by her daughter, Debbie, daughter-in-law, Teddy, 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband, Gordon; sons, Barry and Blaine; sisters, Georgina and Irma Frances; brother, Edward and son-in-law, Kenny Conrad. Visitation is on Sunday, April 10th from 6:30pm – 8:30pm. Funeral service is on Monday, April 11th at 2pm. Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie, NS, Rev. Angus R. MacDonald officiating. The family would like to thank the staff at Whitehills, especially Miriam and Diana for their loving care during Elsie’s final hours.
