Like so many others, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Ritchie’s passing. In the times I saw Ritchie, it was easy to see that he was a salt of the earth kind of human being with a big heart, an active and respected member in his community, and the quintessential family man. Jan, it is easy to see why he was so special to you, as I’m sure you were to him. I only met Richie (and Susanne) about three years ago, but Richie was one of those people who had an instant and lasting impact on you. He was interested to the core in who you are, where you're from, how many common connections you have together. He listened intently to all you had to say, made you feel like his best friend and offered to help you anyway he could... truely one of a.kind. He had the biggest heart and cared deeply for those around him (first and foremost Susanne and the girls - as somehow they trickeled into most conversations). Its quite remarkable how one man could touch so many lives in a positive way, but thats who he was, and thats what made him special. Our hearts and thoughts are with the Gilby family on this huge loss. Thinking of you all ♡♡

To the Gilby Family, Please accept my deepest condolences. I was so shocked and saddened to read of Ritchie’s sudden passing. As his grade six teacher at the old Elmsdale District School, I remember Ritchie as an outgoing young man who was full of pep and vinegar and who loved to chat. It was during his grade six year that Ritchie broke his leg. I still recall visiting him in the hospital and remember Ritchie’s upbeat, confident attitude that he would recover and the leg break was no big deal. I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Ritchie a few years ago and knew of his success in being a well respected paramedic. Ritchie made a huge contribution to his chosen career and was so well liked by his colleagues. He will surely be missed by all who loved and worked with him. Please know, that the entire Gilby Family are in my thoughts and prayers. Hold tight to all your wonderful memories. May you rest in perfect peace, Ritchie. - Cheryl Scotland

Deepest condolences from our family to yours. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
The Broken Chain
We little knew that day,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death, we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

My heart, my prayers are with each of you at this sad, sad time. Ritchie was one in a million. I remember him coming to the house with Rick many times for dinner when they worked on the ambulance together. Rick often spoke of Ritchie, "Dee, he is one smart medic. One smart guy. My deepest sympathy to the family, many friends and EHS colleagues of this true pioneer of our paramedic system in Nova Scotia that has done so much for so many of our citizens. He and those colleagues built far better than they knew. Ritchie has helped so many people in his life. I know his help extended far by the walls of being a paramedic. I know being a good human is about doing for others with no expectation of recognition or reward. Doing things because it is a good human thing to do and that is who Ritchie was and that is what makes his loss so immense.

To the family, friends, and coworkers of Ritchie Gilby, allow me to extend my deepest condolences.
Ritchie was a true EMS pioneer. I had the opportunity to work with Richie as a Paramedic Facilitator within the Nova Scotia Emergency Health System. Richie strived to meet the ever-changing needs of paramedics within the Nova Scotia system.
I fondly remember an incident of me, as a member of Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency stopping at a fast-food establishment for a bite to eat at the end of a long shift. To my surprise, when I arrived at the window to pay, the cashier stated the tab was paid. I later found out that the bill had been paid by Richie while on duty as a Paramedic supervisor.

To Suzanne, Breanna and Megan.
Thoughts and prayers are with you and the girls. There will be so many great stories that will be shared over time. Hopefully, those stories will help with the healing. Ritchie was unique. He had the ability to talk (no dispute there) but he had the ability to listen and learn about people. This is why being a Paramedic was ''natural'' for Ritchie. A shift with Ritchie was always entertaining. This could mean you were going to the Cat dealer looking at dozer or some type of construction machinery or ECI for truck parts, in between calls. His theory, '' you have to have fun at work, or it's just work.'' He was right and we had fun with lots of stories to follow. I glad I had the chance to spend my career with Ritchie as a mentor, partner and most importantly as a friend. Ritchie will be missed by all who new him.

Our sincere condolences to Suzanne, Breanna, Megan and all of Ritchie’s and Suzanne’s family. I had no idea the first time I met Ritchie with his small almost shy smile how dear to my heart this young man would become. I watched as he grew in his career, becoming leaderful in his pursuit of excellence, he was an example of what each of us in health service delivery should aim towards. I watched as Ritchie became a boyfriend to our lovely much loved Suzanne, then becoming her loving supportive husband, and a wonderful father to their two beautiful daughters, Breanna and Megan. As Ritchie grew and matured it was with great happiness and pride that I got to watch, and only then did I come to realize his beautiful small smile was just leaving room for his huge heart. We are saddened you had to leave so early, but we will always be grateful for the positive influence you had on this world Rest easy

Sadness is deep within me. I was there when Ritchie came to ride along at Bartlett’s when he was a mere 17 yo fascinated with the EMS experience. He was a natural.
I also was an ALSI graduate and went to Haiti with Broken Earth. We shared a lot together. He spent hours in my garage rebuilding my Jeep motor while Chicken and I sorta helped. Weddings and funerals we shared as well and sadly lots pain and suffering. All worth it. I will miss him and wish his people as smooth a grieving process as possible given the magnitude of this tragedy.
Hugs to all who are hurting he was a great person. Glad to have had the chance to share life with him.

Ritchie was a one of a kind man. He was a great friend and mentor to many. Myself included. As one of the old dinosaurs of EMS he and I shared many stories and many laughs. Ritchie myself Trevor and DanO would have group chats to stay connected especially after the passing of Rick. I hope he and Rick are having a toast if 151 and catching up. I will miss you Ritchie. Rest easy my friend. Allan Keddy

We remember you as a warm welcoming hard working man, always living life to its fullest and always up for time with family and friends.
You were a dedicated business man, loving husband and amazing father to many more than just your two girls! You were the second father to so many, including our Avery!
To an amazing family I send my deepest sympathies. Sue, Meg and Bre, you’re in our hearts.

Sending our deepest condolences and love and hugs to Richie's family.
He had just dropped into my shop on Friday for a piece of metal and a chat. He was always enthusiastic and so interesting to talk with. Such a shock and tremendous loss for family, friends and indeed the entire community. Cherish every memory. If we could all be more like him the world would be a much better place. R.I.P Ritchie.

Sending my condolences to you Suzanne and the girls, and all that knew Ritchie. He was a great guy, my first East Hants advertiser and continuous supporter of mine after the papers closed telling me he knew I could make this a go. I will always remember him for that. Hugs. Pat Healey, Enfield, N.S.

Please accept my deepest condolences on your loss. There aren’t enough words to describe what an incredible man Ritchie was.
I had the absolute honour of working with him way back in the old VG emergency department.
I, along with a few others, taught him how to start a line.
It was obvious to us all even back then what a great medic he was going to be.
Suzanne, you guys were meant to be together. Your sweet sensitive soul was a perfect match for him.
Thinking of you at this terrible time with much love.

40 years ago I met Ritchie when I walked into Elmsdale District school, our friendship carried over to HERH, and further into life. Over the years we’d stop and say hi, didn’t matter where or what he was doing. It’s difficult to accept that he’s no longer with us. To his wife and girls, I send you love and positive vibes to get you through this difficult time.
