We remember your Mom back in the early 80's when we built our home in Fort Ellis.
Your Mom was always there at the store to give support when we were looking for ideas or material and supplies.
She always called us by name and greeted us with a warm smile and we knew that she loved what she did.
Thinking of you all at this difficult time.

I want to pass on my deepest condolences to George, Dave, Paul and anyone else who was fortunate enough to know Mrs Ettinger. Mrs Ettinger was like a second mother to me. I think I spent more time at the Ettinger’s then at my own home growing up. She did her best keeping us out of mischief. She was so kind and considerate and treated me like one her sons. She was and an amazing cook and baker. I still have her fried clam recipe. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without her guidance. She will never be forgotten.

Dear George, Paul and David,
Dave and I send our deepest condolences to you and your family. Shubenacadie has certainly lost one of its best. Upon reflection of almost 40 years ago, we are so appreciative of the available credit we were given by Ivan and Helen when we were in the process of building our house. Too young and newly married to have established much financial credit, we surmised that Helen must have felt that our parents were trustworthy and so would we be as well. She was a very well respected lady who modeled so many virtues. We experienced first hand her kindness, humour, diligence, responsibility, and orderliness, to name a few.
Many years ago, as a mom of three boys, I felt the outside pressure from a certain in law who will remain nameless, of ensuring I washed our floors every weekend. It was highly recommended that Armstrong product be used on the brand of cushion floor we had. One day as I searched the shelves of Ettinger's Home Hardware, I approached Helen for the much needed product. Her response was no but they would be getting some in (probably on Tuesday). I was a little exasperated, and I am sure she detected this. She very directly told me that with having 3 boys she had to wash her floor every day. The message I took from that was to relax and she was so right!!
We hope you will treasure the many memories you have made with your mom. She certainly was one special lady.

Dear George, Paul and David,
Leonard and I were so sorry to hear of Helen's passing, but we were are glad she is no longer in pain. Helen, and your Dad, were instrumental in starting and maintaining the careers of many of the local tradesmen. Over the years they became not only valued customers, but friends. Helen was especially kind to me when I married Leonard and moved to Shubie. From organizing an anniversary party for us, to sending out a casserole when I broke my collar bone, there were so many instances of her thoughtfulness. I always enjoyed our little chats at the store. Your family, and the community have lost a very special lady. Our thoughts are with you.

George & Family, So sorry to hear that your mom passed away. She was always friendly and is well respected in the community.
I was really impressed when I called the store just after purchasing my house in Cooks Brook in 2012 and she answered the phone. Upon hearing my name she remembered me from the days of visiting my grandmother in Shubie as a young kid and then seeing me in the mid-90s when I was in town driving a charter bus.. We had a great conversation that day about my moves across Canada for work and my decision to finally settle close to familiar territory.
She will be missed by many. My thoughts are with you and all the family.

Dear Paul and family...May the wonderful memory making times all be of comfort to you at this difficult time. I thank you and whomever else put together the beautiful video tribute that helps those of us who did not be fortunate enough to know your Mother have a sweet glimpse into the "good times". From the views of those handsome little boys (you and your brothers), to your Mom and Dad in (?Nashville perhaps) to the family/friends barbeques etc. - really wonderful that "you all" made time for those times of togetherness. It is easy to see that you and your brothers inherited the good looking genes from both your parents - beautiful people, not just in personality. Although your Mom has left her "mortal" body I have no doubt you can sense her presence, her
energy and may that provide some comfort during those lonesome moments - it doesn't really matter how elderly our folks are, they hold a special spot and are always missed. Sending you distance (Therapeutic Touch® and prayer) - keep strong and well, and close to that wonderful family you have. Very best, Judy Donovan Whitty (Charlottetown, PEI) and your friends in ATTN
