I’m having a hard time coming to terms with losing you. It happened so fast and seemed so unfair for something so cruel to happen to someone so loving and strong. What I will remember the most is your love for horses, and the classic American and Spaghetti Westerns you raised me on. I’ll never forget waking up at 7 in the morning every Saturday through my childhood to go to riding lessons, where you introduced me to a lifelong love of the Western saddle, and an animal as complex, loving and strong as you were. I’ll always remember your professionalism and respect when dealing with anyone, stranger or lifelong friend. You had an uncanny ability to make people open up and feel warm and welcomed like they’d known you for years, and had a sense of humour that persisted even until your final day. I can’t express in words how much it hurts that you’re gone. How painful it is that we can’t go to the Tattoo anymore and that our 23 year straight streak of doing so has officially come to an end. You were so much more than just my grandfather. You took me into your home and raised in one of the darkest and most confusing times of my life without fuss. I love you forever, and hope that somewhere somehow I get to see you as I remember you.

A father. A husband. A grandfather. My best friend.
When I lost my father, and you lost your son, nothing could have prepared me for the feeling of hopelessness, the feeling of loss, and the feeling that nothing would ever be right again.
But you took care of me. You opened your arms, your heart, and your home. You made the weight of the world a little bit lighter.
And as the days turned to weeks, and weeks into months, and months into years, you became my best friend. It didn’t matter what we did, or where we did it. Every moment that we spent together was a moment that reminded me of the life I wanted to live, and the person I wanted to be.
I wish I could thank you one last time for helping me become the person I am today. For showing me how to love and how to live, for taking care of all of us in our times of need, and for being my very best friend.

Dear Matthew: You have written such a beautiful tribute to your grandfather. Well done! He was so proud of you, Michael and Aiden. He talked about his grand children all the time, with such enthusiasm and genuine love. I will keep you very close in my thoughts in the coming weeks and months ahead. Mona

Emily and family, our deepest condolences. We remember Gerry as a very fun loving and all around good guy to be around. We all knew him from our days in the nursery business. The many times he came to visit and a lot of phone calls made him a very memorable “FRIEND”.
It was so good to get a chance to see him at the end of 2018 when I was able to come to Nova Scotia for a quick but memorable visit.
Loosing someone you are fond of is never easy, but all the memories will never be forgotten, just like Gerry will never be forgotten.
R.I.P. with love. John, Shelley, Aaron & Wesley Bonas

Condolences to Emily and family. Gerry will certainly be missed by his entire Pan Am family as well. Gerry had this way of making everyone feel at ease with his words, tempo, tone, wisdom and wit...not to mention that infectious smile and laugh. RIP Sir Gerald.

I didn't know Gerry well during his time with Pan Am, as our jobs didn't allow for regular chats, but when I did have the opportunity to speak with him, it was always such a delight.
The memory that I'd like to share, and one that I will never forget, was a simple phone call.
After my husband passed away, Gerry made it a point to call me to express how sorry he was, and in his kind, gentle manner, wasn't afraid to ask the questions that most people shy away from when someone is grieving. He got me talking about it, which was a very healing thing for me.
Thank you Gerry.
May your soul rest in peace.
