Obituary of Dennis Anderson MacDonald

Please share a memory of Dennis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

MACDONALD, Dennis

To all my Family, Friends, Acquaintances and Enemies

This is to let all know that I have left and gone to another dimension to continue the acts of volunteering that I started here.  I will be making a stop in purgatory for a refill along the way.

I left on Wednesday afternoon, November 27, 2019, in Dartmouth General Hospital, after my battle with cancer, with the love of my life and family by my side.

I was born to Clary and Kay (McCarthy) MacDonald on September 19, 1954, the youngest of three siblings.

I retired after working 43 years with DND, enjoying my time spent in the different positions that I held.

I am survived by my faithful sidekick, Betty (B/W) James, who has been there for this tumultuous cancer journey and her children, Tim and Twila; my sister, Judy Cooper, Windsor; nephews, Wayne (Prema) and Kevin; and niece, Karen;great niece, Vanessa.  Also by step daughter, April Lungal; step grandchildren, Alyssa MacDonald, Brianna Eldridge, Destiny, Colten, Jack; step great grandchildren Isaac and Savanna.  As well I have many cousins on both sides of the McCarthy and MacDonald families.

I was predeceased by my parents and sister, Joan Jewers.

I inherited my desire for volunteering from my father, starting at a young age with the Halifax Minor Hockey Association, and have continued to volunteer with many various organizations throughout my time spent here. My longest and last was with the Shubenacadie Lions Club.

I wish to thank all the medical personnel that have been by my side through this ordeal, in particular, Medical Oncology – Dr Stephanie Snow and her nurse Jessica, and my Family Doctor – Dr Jonathan Fox and staff and the wonderful staff of 4 West.  There were many more, too numerous to mention by name and for fear that I may accidently omit naming them.

My leaving here will make some sad and some glad.

I have no regrets for what I have accomplished, and for what I did not accomplish here.  I am more than ready to take that up in the next chapter of my life.

As a final request to all, is that you strongly discourage your children, grandchildren and any others from taking up the habit of smoking.

My body has been donated to the Dalhousie Medical School.

At my request, there will be no memorial service or burial.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In memory of me, please take a moment to help and/or assist a volunteer association near you.

If one may be so inclined, donations may be made to the Lions Foundation of Canada, the Shubenacadie Lions Club Sick Children Fund, or a charity that may be dear to your heart.

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”

“You make a living by what you get.  You make a life by what you give.”
