Obituary of Jay Lumiere

Please share a memory of Jay to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

LUMIERE, James “Jay” – of Halifax, Nova Scotia, passed away on October 22, 2019 at the age of 74, surrounded by his family and supported by the wonderful palliative care team at the QEII Health Science Centre, VG Site, Halifax. Born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, he was the son of Jewel Viola (Vacheresse) Lumiere and the late James Joseph Kenmey.

Jay was an ocean captain, pilot, aerospace designer, hotel and yacht club owner, flight instructor, tennis coach, animal lover, visionary, adventurer, writer, artist and dreamer. He was an incorrigible story-teller, a veteran and a fierce veterans’ rights advocate. Jay was a father, son, husband, brother, grandfather, soon-to-be great grandfather, friend and soulmate.

He loved horseback riding, sailing, flying, model airplane building and sitting by the fireplace watching a good movie or reading a favorite book. Anyone who knew Jay will remember with fondness the great joy he took in food, especially the ‘perfect’ steak and anything sweet.

Known for his quirky sense of humor, he was unfailingly strong in the face of adversity, and was always the exception to the rule. Loyal, forgiving and big-hearted, Jay was always generous to a fault.

He will be greatly missed and forever remembered by his wife, Jan McColm; daughters, Shana Kenmey, Jessica Lumiere (David Nicoll), Chelsea Lumiere (Reid Thompson); grandchildren, Rhylee (Brock) Stone, Owen and Willow Nicoll, and Ruby Thompson; siblings, Sylvia Wolkie, Cheryl Kenmey, Chris Kenmay and Suzie Lumiere.

Jay was predeceased by his father and his grandson, Rafe Nicoll.

Memorial donations in memory of Jay may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Condolences, words of comfort and memories of Jay may be shared with the family at www.ettingerfuneralhome.com
