I was in Yellowknife in the spring of 1979 looking for a job that would help me immigrate to Canada from Germany. I had been volunteering in the Beaver Program of Frontiers Foundation up till then, helping aboriginal families building their own houses. Having studied sociology in Germany, I felt able to apply for a social work job. Doug gave me the chance to volunteer for a few weeks in the halfway house that he was the director of. He also let me stay in his own household with his wife Kathy who had recently given birth to their only son. Doug eventually gave me a written reference that was crucial for my immigration papers! I saw him last in 2013 when I was travelling in Nova Scotia and stopped by to say hello. I always held fond memories of his outstanding friendlyness, wisdom, serenity, and love of people. He also had an invigourating sense of humour that I enjoyed very much! I hope you are fine where you are now, Doug! I'll always remember you very fondly!

Doug participated in a project called Share Wisdom. This is one of the images from that session. I loved the sparkle in his eye that day. I loved listening to his "Shared Wisdom". Miss you very much Doug.

I am your niece but we only met a couple of times in this life. During our brief encounters, I got the impression that you had a kind and gentle soul. I’m sure those who knew you better than I are missing you dearly. My heart goes out to them. I hope they are finding some peace as time passes. We never forget the ones we love but the hurt of losing them does dull a bit with time.

It is with great sadness that I read of Doug's passing on the weekend. While I only had the honour of knowing him for the past year, Doug made it very easy to love and admire him, despite his humble nature. His smile lit up the room, shining on whomever he was speaking with, especially young children. His unending willingness to share a story and have a laugh were just some of the ways his incredible love of life shined though. I am honoured to have spent time with him and send my love to Michelle and all of his family. I doubt he knew how deeply he touched the people around him, but he is and will be deeply missed.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of such a wonderful person.
I am the Commanding Officer of the Nova Scotia Highlanders, an Infantry unit that is part of the Canadian Armed Forces. We invited Mr. Knockwood to come and visit the unit during a training exercise we had scheduled, since he had expressed an interest. Hearing that he spent time in the Black Watch, we just had to meet him. It was a real pleasure to host him for the afternoon. The comments that soldiers passed on to me after they had spoken with him were a testament to the kind of person Doug was. My soldiers said he was strong, kind, genuine, a great story teller and a truly inspirational person.
My sincere condolences to his friends and family. It was a real pleasure to have had the opportunity to meet Doug.

Condolences to all of Elder Doug's family on his passing. What a powerful work he did in this world, and the Star Nations are the richer for his walking on.
I met him at the Arts Mawi'omi at Acadia University in 2015, where he was one of the Elders keeping a Sacred Fire burning through four days and nights. That act in itself was profoundly impactful.
For a Mi'gmaq woman who is also of other nations, and raised elsewhere, the connection he offered to my grandfather's people and our shared history was a great gift, and so graciously given.
I treasured being part of the circle who gathered around at all hours, to listen to his stories and gentle teachings. For me, though, the most profound thing happened at the end of the gathering. On the last morning, prior to setting out for Charlottetown, the next stop on my tour, I stopped in for breakfast at the B&B where Doug and Michelle were staying. There were 6 or 7 of us gathered, and, as we shared breakfast, Doug began to talk about his Residential School experiences. We sat together for 4 hours, while the staff of the B&B just kept quietly bringing water, refilling our coffee and tea, and probably listening, too. It was an amazing conversation, a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
And then, Doug and Michelle offered to guide me via the shortcut to Truro, set me onward to catch the ferry. They led the way through the Annapolis valley roads, and pulled off at the turn-off to Shubie. 'Come visit,' urged Doug, 'just for a little while.'
I so wanted to; but I knew my next hosts were waiting. Still, the pull to follow and meet Doug's community was almost irresistible.
When i decided i'd really better get to the ferry, he smiled and said, well, they were going to visit some relatives in Truro then. And they led me all the way through, then we said goodbye on the other side of Truro.
When i got to the ferry, the biggest bald eagle i've ever seen floated down and landed, not 20 feet away on the wharf. He turned his head, and I swear he winked.
When I came back from Abegweit, i went to Antigonish, then had to drive to Halifax in a raging storm. I was so scared, alone in a tiny car on roads i didn't know; but I looked up, about halfway there, and saw an eagle, flying just ahead. Then I knew I'd be alright, and I was.
I know a person's life, especially to his family, is much more complicated than any one story. I was fortunate to meet Elder Doug at a time when his life, his family, his work and learning, meant the he had a wealth of wisdom and love to offer me. So, I am thankful, and I must thank his family and community, for it is within the compass of your love that he became that Elder whosr sharing is a treasure I'll carry thankfully all through my life.

To Michelle, Carol Ann and family,
I first met Doug many years ago when Carol Ann and I were in law school together. He was such a gentle and giving soul then and remained the same all through the years. He always made himself available to those in need and you knew that if you needed an Elder to talk to, he would be there for you. He was so loved and respected at our Friendship Centre. Doug accomplished so much in his 88 years and remained humble, compassionate and kindhearted. He taught through example. He will be greatly missed by the Indigenous community and Nova Scotians in general.
My deepest condolences.

Doug use to come into a store I was working at for many years in Stewiacke...Simons Variety. At least once a week, this soft speaking man would come in,make a purchase and always stop and talk for awhile...asking about my Life,my kids...and everything. He had a wonderful memory and remembered our conversations well throughout the 7 years I worked there. To say he was one of the sweetest men I had ever known would be an understatement.I know I loved having him come in,he just brightened my day considerably.I am so sorry for his loss to the communities that he cared so deeply for,and his family who will profoundly feel the hole he leaves at the table...and in their hearts. The epitome of a gentleman...he was also an extremely...gentle man. Now...he rises with angels .His time may be done on this plain, but his work and love continue in another. God bless you Doug...thankyou for your talks, your smile...and for the man you were. xoxo

I am so sorry to hear of Doug's death. He was a true gentleman. I always enjoy our conversations as he was very knowledgeable on so many subjects. Indian Brook has lost a true elder who gave of himself to all he encountered. Rest in Peace Doug

I would like to offer my deepest sympathy at this time of loss. While I did not know Doug well, I did know him through the lives of several of his children. He will be deeply missed.

It is with a heavy heart that I express my condolences to Michelle. and all of Doug's family. I believe that Doug left a positive impact on people he came in contact with during his life and work, including me.
I am grateful that without planning, I found Doug sitting on his porch about two weeks ago - what a lovely chat we had. I'll never forget him!
Respectfully
Sandra
