What a fantastic teacher and communicator!
Although I had him for just my grade six year, I have never forgotten his easy going nature and great relationship with all those around him, especially us kids.
A great teacher, coach and practical joker.
We always remember the special ones!

My deepest condolences to Pat, Kevin, Jason and grandchildren.
I taught with Rob for many years at North River Elementary. Rob was a supportive and thoughtful colleague. During trying times, he always had just the right words of advice to keep things in perspective. As a teacher, Rob made each and every one of his students feel important and valued. He would do anything for his students and they for "Miller."
Rob spoke proudly of his sons and his wife. You could tell that family was very important to him.
There are many "Miller" stories that bring smiles to all. Track and field days, in-service days and preparing for Christmas concerts bring back special memories of Rob. He was a one of a kind teacher and a special friend who will be sadly missed.

Dear Pat and family,
It's been many years since I taught with Rob for three years at North River Elem (mid 70s) but they were memorable ones thanks to Rob's great outlook and philosophy on life. I am not surprised at the many condolences expressed by students, parents, and faculty alike for he was a much loved and respected teacher and friend. All of the students loved him as evidenced by the comments here.
I trust everyone's love and respect for Rob will make his passing easier to bear.

To Pat and Family,
As one of the many students who went through NRES, I referred to Laurie as "Miller" almost exclusively. I was a grade 6 student of his in the late 80s. I live in Vancouver now and I heard about his passing from so many different sources. A testament to how many young people he had an impact on.
He stood out as a unique teacher amongst all I had in elementary school. Allowed us the freedom to achieve at our own pace, and left room for us to be independent. In our last year of elementary school before heading off to our next challenge of junior high, I'm guessing most of us did not realize how valuable that would be to us.
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. My deepest sympathies to you.
Sincerely,
Julie McGill

Mr Miller. I am absolutely heartbroken . You told me as a shy young girl "Shelley you do what your heart tells you to do in life " I have never forgotten those words or your kind smile and heart. You set the bar as how other teachers should teach our children. You made me feel special and your sense of humour was never forgotten. As a shy young girl you brought out my true self. I have never forgotten you. I always wanted to go back and tell you all the things I did with my life but never did. I hope I made you proud. Your family I know will miss that amazing soul. Thank you mr miller for being there for me. I will never forget you

I'm so very sorry for your loss. "Miller" was my teacher in the late 80's and although I had some wonderful teachers through the years, he was by far my favorite. He always made us smile and laugh. I will always remember him in our classroom, leaned back in his chair, shuffling peanuts around in his hand and telling one of us to go write something on the blackboard. I also know that my mother (Kerry Irving) and grandmother (Lummy Smith) thought the world of him too. Your family is in my prayers!

Dear Pat and family, I was saddened to hear of Robbie's death. Rob and I taught together for thirty years and I remember him as a talents colleague and friend. He was a talented, innovative teacher. In the early years of our careers his teaching both "reading" and phys ed was a departure from the usual concept of gym teacher. He was quite the philosopher and frequently told me to remain true to who I was and how I taught.
Rob was very proud of his family and his heritage. I remember his delight when the boys were born. he might not have said much but he beamed!!
We used to gather at your home after school on the last day. Staff of all ages with children. We ate, watched the river and talked. Sometimes we played Trivial Pursuit and my competitive side kicked in. Those are some of the cherished memories of my life.

My deepest condolences. Miller (as we all called him) taught me in grade six 95-96. He was the first teacher and one of the first adults to treat me like a person rather than a child. That respect has stuck with me my whole life. I will miss him very much and believe he definetly left the world a better place than he found it.

I remember getting into a nasty argument with a classmate and friend when we were in Mr. Miller's grade six class all those years ago, not long before the end of the school year. He sat us down and spoke to us honestly about the future: we were soon going to junior high school and could very well find ourselves drifting apart in the coming years. If that happened, did we really want the last memories of being friends to be an bickering and strife? When we thought about it, we didn't. At Mr. Miller's urging we shook hands (because, as he said, that's what men do) and carried on as friends for those last couple of weeks of elementary school. Sure enough, we drifted apart but at least it wasn't in anger.
I have had a great many excellent teachers in my life. Mr. Miller was one of the very best of them. He was the first teacher I had that treated his students as impending adults rather than as children and it is that legacy of respect that I shall always remember. I think it was because of this that I cannot ever remember him raising his voice-- the culture he created on his classroom meant he never had to.
Thank you, Mr. Miller.

I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to Pat, Kevin, Jason, grandchildren and family.
I taught with Rob for over thirty years at North River Elementary. My memories of Rob are many. His "special" sense of humour made life as a teacher bearable in the hard times. But my fondest memories of Rob will always be of a man with compassion and patience for his many students that he nurtured and supported when they needed it most. "Miller" was a legend at North River and he will be forever in the hearts and minds of those students who loved him. His gifts benefited many.
I apologize for being unable to attend visitation as I am out of the country. Please accept my condolences. You are in my thoughts and I know Miller will be missed by family and his many students. Our world is sadder without him.

My sincere condolences to all the family and friends of Mr. MILLER (aka just "MILLER"), beloved North River Elementary teacher. Coincidentally, I gave him a call just last week on his birthday...no answer, so I left him a message telling him how awesome he is. (I *really* hope he got it...had no idea he was in hospital). Second only to my Dad, Miller was my favourite school teacher of all-time (and certainly the same for so many others too). What an influence. He made Grade Six the greatest year ever. He inspired me personally to become a teacher. Years after becoming one, he then said (with the modern school system being the way it is) that it I should pursue my dreams of becoming a full-time magician. Was lucky enough to sneak a 2-4 of 'Miller Time' beer into the school when he retired in June 2006, to present him as a gift during his last time in the school on report card day. Also, I had made a binder of all the hilarious old comics written and drawn about him, by yours truly, Jason D. MacLeod and Cat Bent. Miller said he loved them. Luckily, we stayed in touch on occasion, and it was always wonderful to know Miller remained as candid, honest, and witty as he ever was, despite some debilitating health issues in recent years. Field trips, crazy science classes, his legendary 'Black Book of Doom'...so many memories. Would *love* to hear more stories at the visitation, and to celebrate his life with everyone. And if anyone reading this would like to see all the old Miller comics (most of which were originally drawn *while* he was teaching class!!) I'll have those for you to look at there too. Such a big part of so many lives growing up...hope to see you at the visitation on Saturday.
