MACKENZIE-CAMPBELL, Shirley - Truro/Stewiacke
It is with great sadness that the daughters of Shirley Mackenzie-Campbell announce her passing. Shirley was born in Truro to her late parents Leonard and Adelaide (MacLean) Lane.
From youth to her senior years, Shirley was a woman of spirit, strength and independence. In 1964 her husband, John “Kenneth” Mackenzie of Truro passed away. At the tender age of 37, Shirley was left to raise three daughters aged 8, 11 and 14. No small feat. She was a resourceful woman who did the job.
In 1972, Shirley married Ken Campbell of Stewiacke East. They spent 15 happy years together at their home in Shortt’s lake. Mother enjoyed visiting friends and family, playing the piano which she did by ear. In 1991 Ken passed away and shortly after, Shirley moved to Stewiacke.
Shirley was always interested in politics and world affairs. It would not be unusual to get a call saying something of significance had happened and why wasn’t one watching CNN. She was a loyal supporter of the Liberal Party of Canada and a picture of Pierre Trudeau graced the top of her fridge. She was a woman of “fashion” and loved clothes. She could put an outfit together in a flash. Her daughters thoroughly enjoyed the fashion shows when choosing an outfit for a special occasion. Mom was a great reader; when coming in late from a social event, a teenage daughter would hope Mom had fallen asleep while reading.
Shirley was fun, had a great wit which often came in a flash. Even in her advanced years, she never missed a thing.
For many years, Mom had treasured companionship of the late George Goodwin of Stewiacke East. He passed away in 2005. She missed him deeply.
Shirley was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by her daughters, Shelley Mackenzie, Bonnie Mackenzie and Heather Mackenzie; grandsons, James Robertson, Michael Callaghan, Matthew Callaghan and Justin Callaghan; and her dear nieces and nephews and in particular, her ever supportive niece, Faye Francis of Truro. She was predeceased by her brothers, Lewis and Peter; sisters, Millie, Edie and Marjorie.
Shelley, Bonnie and Heather want to express special thanks to the staff of Melville Gardens in Halifax and Elk Court in Brookfield where she lived since 2010.
