Obituary of Dorothy "Jean" Faulkner

Faulkner, Dorothy “Jean” - of Waverley, NS passed away July 3, 2016 in Melville Lodge at the age of 97. Jean was born in North Salem, Hants County, NS. She was a daughter of the late Otis and Emma (Mc Daniel) Nelson. Jean attended the Normal College in Truro, which she said was made possible when her father sold a prize calf. She graduated in 1939 and began a long career as a teacher. She began teaching in one room school houses on the Eastern Shore of NS and went on to teach at all grade levels in NS and NB. She taught for 30 years and had wonderful stories to tell about it. Jean was very involved in the United Church as a Sunday school teacher, 22 years as Friendship Secretary in the UCW, Friendly Circle Group, and a Charter Member of the UCW. After retiring from teaching, she drove for Meals on Wheels for 10 years. She had a great love of reading, enjoyed bowling, which she continued to do into her eighties, and dancing. She is survived by sons, Alden (Heather), Waverley and Brian, Waverley; granddaughters, Lindsay (Nathan) Jessop, Waverley and Megan (John) Conway, Sackville; great-grandsons, Landon Jessop and Lane Jessop. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Bertram; sisters, Effie, Lena, Florence, Mildred, Annie, Edith, and Kathleen; brothers, Sidney and Harry. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. Visitation will be held 2:00 – 4:00pm Sunday, July 10 in St. John’s United Church, 3360 Hwy. 2 Fall River NS, from where a Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00am Monday, July 11, Rev. Grant Kerr officiating. Interment will be in Preeper Hill Cemetery, Shubenacadie at a later date for immediate family. Donations in memory of Jean may be made to the Bert and Jean Faulkner Fund of the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
