Obituary of James "Jim" Clarence Campbell

Campbell, James “Jim” C. – Halifax/New Glasgow/ Summerside, 75. This much loved man passed away peacefully, with his wife by his side, Sunday, June 26, 2016 in the QEII, Victoria General Site, Halifax, NS. Born in Summerside, PEI, he was a son of the late Earle and Mary (O’Connor) Campbell. Jim was a passionate and dedicated teacher for more than 30 years who began his career in western PEI. He developed special relationships with many of his students and coworkers, and enjoyed creating a yearning for learning in those he taught. He finished his career in education as principal of Elm Street School, Summerside. Following this first retirement, Jim returned to University and earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Thus began his second vocation in counselling, with a particular focus on addictions. He worked as Manager of Mt. Herbert Addictions Services, PEI, where he was respected and loved. Never content in retirement, Jim furthered his career working in Mental Health Services in New Glasgow for several years. He finished his working life doing contract work in Mental Health in 2014. Jim’s compassion, vast knowledge, and experience touched many lives throughout the Maritimes. Jim was blessed with the ability to speak with anyone and make them feel comforted and supported. His brilliant mind, unique humour, and generous heart will be dearly missed. Jim and Lorna enjoyed many wonderful experiences in their winter sojourns in Florida. Jim loved live theatre and music. One of his proudest achievements was playing a lead role in a production of Evangeline at the Carrefour Theatre in Charlottetown. Jim was a grateful Friend of Bill W. and freely gave of himself and his knowledge to anyone in need. Jim is survived by his loving wife and soulmate, Lorna Burbine; children, James “Jim” (Lisa), Gordon “Gordie” (Somrak); stepdaughter, Staci (Lance) Pitts; grandchildren, Sadie and Charlie Pitts, Scotsburn,NS, Tanawat Campbell, Sisaket, Thailand; siblings, John (Janet) Campbell, Orono, ON, Earle (Fran) Campbell, Kingston, ON, Frances Cullen, Montreal, Quebec, Florence (Gerard) Gallant, Summerside, PEI; many nieces and nephews; countless friends. He was predeceased by his brothers, Lorne, Basil “Jeb”; sister, Joan Campbell. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie, NS. Visitation will be held 6-8pm Monday, July 4 in East Prince Funeral Home, 245 Pope Road, Summerside, PEI. A Funeral Mass will be held 10am Tuesday, July 5 in St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 290 Notre Dame Street, Summerside, PEI, Fr. John Lacey officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Donations in memory of Jim may be made to Addictions Services, PEI, The Lung Association, or a charity of your choice. The support and compassion shown to Jim and Lorna by the Palliative Care Nurses was astonishing and the family wishes to express their deep gratitude to them and the entire Palliative Care Team.
