Fiona Irwin

Obituary of Fiona Mary Irwin

IRWIN, Fiona Mary (nee Thomson) – age 83, passed away on Thursday December 19th, 2024, at Wynn Park Villa, Truro. Born in Selkirk, Scotland, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Enid Mary  (Murray) Thomson and the step daughter to the late Gerda Rohrich. Loving wife for 63 years to the late Brian Irwin (deceased 2023).

Fiona, Brian and their young family left Scotland to find work in Canada in 1966. She worked for many years as an elementary school teacher.  Fiona was a huge creative talent with all things to do with fabrics- spinning her own wool, designing,  weaving, sewing- she loved her craft work and was very gifted. She turned this talent into a full time job of weaving place mats and table runners, knitting sweaters, she sold her wares at many different craft shows and out of her home. Many of her creations included the tartan’s of her native Scotland. Fiona was a voracious reader and had very diverse interests in everything she read.  She always kept up with her many friends and family, whether they be in Canada, Scotland and elsewhere in the world. This included her school friends, from 60+ years ago in some cases and they would go out for a girls’ night out together whenever Fiona was visiting from Canada! Her friends and family were clearly very important to her. After Brian’s retirement Fiona and Brian travelled extensively and explored the world together going to many different places. She loved her many animals over the years cats or dogs and her current dog Zoe misses her immensely.

Fiona is survived her children, David (Min Wang), Kevin (Anne Murray) and Sharon (Terry Stevenson deceased) her grandchildren Sarah and Micheal Irwin, Trevor, Andrew (Zeena Rashid) and Melanie Irwin, Calan, Eric and Ryan Stevenson, and her great-grandson Dean, and her sister Karen Dawson in England.
