Obituary of Lorna Blanche Thompson

THOMPSON (GRANT), Lorna Blanche - age 88 of Nine Mile River, died peacefully at Maplestone Enhanced Care on Monday, October 7th, 2024.  Lorna was born in East Gore, the oldest of ten children of the late Ralph and Jessie (Weir) Grant.  

Lorna was a lifelong learner. She started teaching in a one-room schoolhouse when she was sixteen years old and retired from Riverside Education Centre, Milford, NS, one of the newest and most innovative schools in the province at the time. She was a loyal Red Hatter for many years, frequently traveling with her friends and attending Red Hat Society functions. Lorna enjoyed bowling with her friends weekly and kept in touch with many of her retired colleagues over the years. She loved spending summers at Shortts Lake with her grandchildren. Although most people knew her as Mrs. Thompson, “Mammy” was her favourite title.

Lorna is survived by her son, Stephen (Claudia); daughters, Sharon (John) Tanner and Sue (Tim) Gibbon; grandchildren, Michele Thompson, Jessie (Andrew) Lipsit, Katie (Chris) Cawthra, Colten Tanner (Crystal), Travis (Victoria) Gibbon, Todd (Tyler) Gibbon-Thorne; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Owen Thompson and their mother, Abby Thompson; Cameron and Joshua Lipsit, Theodore and Thomas Cawthra, Lachlan and Avery Gibbon.  Also survived by sisters, Avis Gravelle, Doris Grant, and Brenda (Jeff) White, and many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Jack Andrew; sisters-in-law, Marie Grant, Blanche Grant and Susan Grant.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her grandson, Mark Thompson; sister, Anne Andrew; brothers, Laurie (Edna), George, Earle, Phillip and Clifford.  

The family would like to thank all of the staff at Maplestone Enhanced Care for the love and amazing care that Lorna received over the past two years.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Homes Shubenacadie and Elmsdale. There will be no visitation by request. A private family graveside service will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the East Gore Cemetery or a charity of your choice.
