We want to extend our condolences to all of you and your families, upon the passing of your father, Ben. He was the last of his generation, on the hill. Ben always had a big smile on his face, whenever you met him. Ben was a great neighbour and a very generous person. I remember him lending Dad the tractor to plow the snow in the yard . He also lent Dad the tractor to plough our garden and in turn Dad helped him gather the hay bales from the fields. Ben was blessed with a long life and the good fortune of having a close family.

The Vermeulen Family
Our family like yours, whose parents immigrated from Holland, left behind those they loved. I can’t imagine any of it was easy. I’m so thankful our parents met and our families became like family.
I grew up my whole life knowing you all even if it was mom telling me after a visit with your parents, what everyone was up too. Your parents and ours had a friendship they nurtured and that spanned decades with so many happy memories and also remarkably sad ones.
So many wonderful things our family can say about your dad though one very special one leaping above all others is your dads warm welcoming smile. With few words we knew your dad cared deeply. Ben was a great man, husband, father and friend and had a life well lived. His legacy remains.
On behalf of Mom, Johanna, and all the Nooyen’s we send our very deepest condolences and love at this overwhelmingly sorrowful time.

Our sympathy to all the family. Paul has said Ben must have been perhaps the last of the original group of
Families that came from Holland in the early 1950’s. Their contribution to the farming and especially the dairy
Industry with their hard work was what made dairy farming successful. Ben was an example that has been passed on to his family.
You have been Blessed.

My memories of Uncle Ben,
In 1981, I visited Canada for the first time, carrying many special stories from my parents. My parents had preceded me in visiting their beloved relatives who had emigrated in the 1950s. We were welcomed by Uncle Ben and Aunt Anna and stayed in the basement. During this vacation, we traveled with Aunt Anna and Uncle Ben to the Antigonish region, where we would attend the wedding of my/our niece Jocelyn Maas. We set out with the camper, which was quite an experience for us at the time, and on the way back, Uncle Ben safely drove us to Milford. We were sleeping soundly in the back of the camper. He showed us a lot of the region they lived in, especially the forests and Indian reserves, which left a deep impression on me. I eventually visited Canada five times and was always warmly welcomed at the Hill. A special trip was with my mom, Maria Vermeulen, dad, and Aunt Petra. This was also the last visit of my mother to her brother Ben. Later, I traveled around Nova Scotia with three sisters, and of course, we had a pleasant visit to the Hill. It already felt like home to me, with Uncle Ben and his many stories, and a visit to Pier 21 in Halifax with my sisters – so special to guide them in that beautiful country. Over the years, I received occasional phone calls from Canada, but as time passed, your age and health became factors. Now, the time has come for you to let go of everything and find peace. I hope to bring you a final greeting in May 2024, and in my thoughts, I will carry my mother, your sister, with me. Farewell,
With love, Ans van der Zanden Son-Breugel The Netherlands

Wietze Zwart posted a condolence
Tuesday, October 24, 2023
24-10-2023 In memory of Uncle Ben Vermeulen, by Wietze Zwart, partner of Ans van der Zanden (the eldest daughter of Maria van der Zanden-Vermeulen, Ben's oldest sister).
My first encounter with Ben was in May 1997 when he, along with Aunt Ann, Aunt Lies, and Uncle Wim, was in the Netherlands to celebrate the 40th wedding anniversary of Broer and Miet (Maria, his eldest sister). After that, Ans and I visited Canada together three times. The first two times, we stayed at Ben and Ann's house. Besides Aunt Ann's hospitality, warmth, humor, and culinary skills, I remember our conversations with Uncle Ben in the evenings, usually accompanied by a glass of Canadian Whisky.
[An amusing anecdote to share is the following: One evening, when the whisky ran out, Uncle Ben said, "I have something else," and he produced a bottle of Sonnema Berenburg (originally a Frisian herbal liqueur). When we poured two small glasses, the color was orange (similar to orange bitters), and the taste was off. Later, when I contacted the producer of Sonnema Berenburg about this, it turned out that the bottle was already 17 years old, and the herbs in the bottle had lost their potency. Well, at least he could keep it.]
During these shared conversations, I noticed that he was well-informed about the global situation and the economy. He followed news on the internet from his birthplace, Breugel, and responded to family members' posts on Facebook. He also regularly video-called through the internet, even in the middle of the night due to the time zone difference with the Netherlands. In our conversations in Canada, I also sensed his pride in his children's accomplishments, and he gladly took us to visit their businesses. When I once asked if he had shared this with them, he admitted that he hadn't. I also noticed that, as he got older, he struggled to adapt to modern farming methods and found it hard to relate. We shared wonderful times with Aunt Ann and Uncle Ben, but we also know from his children's stories that he wasn't always easy. He will remain in my memory as the last remaining immigrant who has now passed away, and I express the hope that the enjoyable connections with the remaining families may endure for a long time. Rest in peace, Uncle Ben.
