Obituary of Mona Maatouk

Please share a memory of Mona to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

MAATOUK, Mona, age 46, of Enfield, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on October 8th, 2023 at Dartmouth General Hospital, surrounded by family.

Born in Zgharta, Lebanon, she was the daughter of Marriette (Khoury) and the late Wardan Dahab. Mona met her husband, Nehmatallah “Norman,” in Lebanon where they married and eventually immigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada, in hopes of building a better life for themselves. They resided in Cole Harbour for two years, before deciding to move to Enfield. They took over “Enfield Variety & Video Rentals,” which is still open today.

Mona loved Enfield. She enjoyed the peace and tranquillity the village provided her and her family. In addition to being a business owner, she was an active member of the community, having spent a couple years volunteering with the Fire Department in Enfield. Furthermore, anyone who knew Mona knew she was incredibly devoted to her Maronite Catholic faith. She was an active member of Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church in Enfield, as well as Our Lady of Lebanon Church. She is grateful to have had both a Canadian and Lebanese community to which she belonged, having made many close friends there.

Every year, she would volunteer countless hours in the kitchen preparing for the Cedar Festival in Halifax. She thrived in the kitchen, known for her delicious Mediterranean/Lebanese food. She loved cooking, often hosting family dinners. She was incredibly fond of drinking her tea, unwilling to go a day without drinking at least a few cups.

She is survived by her husband, Norman; children, Karla (Thomas), Kristina, and Kassandra; her mother, Marriette; many brothers and sisters (she loves you all, but in her words, “so many to write”); and plenty of nieces and nephews.

Besides her father, she is predeceased by her brother, Sayid Dahab.

Mona and her family would like to thank the nurses on 5 West and 5 East at the Dartmouth General Hospital for their exceptional care. She would also like to thank the following physicians: Dr. MacLennan, Dr. Cheng, and Dr. Adeniji (Dr. Domi), Dr. Sheridan, Dr. Quinn, and Dr. Moeller, for their incredible care throughout her journey. Mona would also like to extend her thanks to the VON nurses, namely Dave, as well her palliative care nurse, Dawn.

Visitation will be held this Wednesday, October 11th from 5-8pm at Our Lady of Lebanon Catholic Church, located at 111 Clayton Park Drive, Halifax. A funeral will be held the following day, at 11am on Thursday October 12th, at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Lady of Lebanon Church.
