Obituary of Wayne Gordon Keddy
It is with great sadness that the family of Wayne Gordon James Keddy Sr., 84, of Halifax and Enfield announce his passing after a long battle with illness on Saturday, August 19th. Born in Halifax, he was a son of Percy Randolf Keddy and Maude Alice (Wilneff) Keddy.
Wayne was a loving husband, son, brother, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bonnie; daughter, Tracy Dzibela-Boyd (Matt); son, Wayne Jr. (Angie); grandchildren, Mary and Emily Dzibela, Max Keddy and Noah Doncaster; sister-in-law Donna; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters, Audrey Power and Dorothy Naugler; brothers, Dale, Floyd and Donald.
Wayne worked at Halifax West High School as a math teacher before retiring after 32 years. His love for sports began in childhood, his greatest passions being hockey and horses. He was an avid hockey player, being drafted by the Detroit Red Wings at the age of 16 and attended their training camp in Detroit, but came home to attend Saint Mary’s University, graduating in 1961. He travelled across Canada and to Europe playing alongside Dale, his brother and team’s coach, winning multiple championships. He also coached his children in softball and hockey, winning a championship in both sports. Wayne was also passionate about horses. He competed in (and won) multiple showjumping championships at the Atlantic Winter Fair and other competitions. He was an active member of St. Bernard’s parish in Enfield, serving both on the Church Council and with the Knights of Columbus for many years. He also spent a few years coordinating the St. Bernard’s Canada Day community festivities.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro, specifically the folks in the Surgical Ward and the Palliative Care Unit for taking care of Wayne. Thank you to the VON Nursing and Home Care staff and the staff at Earth Angels who have been a wonderful support for Wayne.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Homes, Shubenacadie and Elmsdale.
