Obituary of Elizabeth Surrett

SURRETT, Elizabeth - age 95 of Halifax, passed away peacefully on January 20^th, 2023, at the Arborstone Enhanced Care Home, Halifax, Nova Scotia.  She had been cared for there since 2019 following deteriorating health.  Elizabeth was born in Renfrew, Scotland to the late Alexander and Bella (Morgan) McHattie. She was the youngest sibling to one sister and three brothers, all deceased.

 

In 1958, she emigrated to Ottawa where she later met and married her husband, Bliss Surrett.  Following his untimely death in September 1962, she began working with the British Embassy in Ottawa but eventually settled in Halifax in the mid 1960’s in order to be nearer to her late husband’s family.

 

As well as a long secretarial career, she spent numerous happy years as a volunteer at the Lobby shop in the Halifax Infirmary.

 

Elizabeth loved to travel and enjoyed many trips to various parts of the world.  She also enjoyed Scottish Country dancing and made lifelong friends there.

 

Elizabeth is survived by nieces and nephews, still residing in Scotland, including her nephew, Ian McHattie and her late husband’s niece, Jan Smith’s widower, Bob Smith, residing in Truro, Nova Scotia.  She is also survived by dear friends, Susan Morris and Brian Forbes who in the absence of nearby family have supported and cared for her throughout.

 

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. In the spring, Elizabeth will be buried alongside her husband Bliss in the Maplewood Cemetery, Peticodiac, New Brunswick.

 

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Arborstone Enhanced Care Home for their ongoing support, compassion as well as understanding and  regular communication with her nephew, Ian, in Scotland.
