Obituary of Shelley Margaret Young
Shelley passed away at her home in Nine Mile River on January 3, at the age of 67, following a short illness. She was full of love and light and has left us way too soon. Shelley was loved by all who knew her and she found the good in everyone she met. She will be remembered for her warmth and kindness, her beautiful singing voice, her laugh, her friendship, her quiet wisdom.
Shelley’s life has been filled with music, travel, friends, and family. She was a talented singer, guitar player and most recently a songwriter, a member of multiple choirs including the Bedford Singers, River Country Choir, and the East Hants Chorale Society who she travelled to New York City with and performed at Carnegie Hall. There have been many but, in addition to NYC, some of her most memorable trips include a culinary tour of Italy and a Caribbean cruise with all of her boys.
At home, being Granny to Elias and Levi gave her boundless joy and they adored her, Allan provided endless humour and love, and she had unlimited pride for Jamie, Benjie, Jonathan, and “daughter” Shawna. Shelley also found happiness watching and photographing the Nine Mile River from the deck while having a drink, sharing her love of music, singing with her brother Bill, and spending time with Allan and her friends at the camp in Indian Harbour Lake where she was a member of the Red Hill Golf Club. She found beauty in everything around her - a smooth river rock, a pretty shell, a wildflower, a gorgeous sunset over the river.
Shelley is survived by her husband, Allan; sons Jamie, Benjie (Shawna), and Jonathan; grandsons Elias and Levi; brother Bill (Kathy) Preeper; sisters-in-law Glenda Osborne (Jim), Margo Wood (Glen), brother-in-law Garnet Young (Annette); special friends Sue Stephens, Peggy Conrad, and Brenda Hoskin plus numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins, and close friends. Shelley was predeceased by her parents, William and Margaret Preeper, and her old friend Badger.
We extend sincere thanks to the caring people from VON, palliative care, and homecare. They made it possible for Shelley to be at home as she wished and for that we are grateful.
