I taught with Simon here in Norman Wells- at MMS. I found him great to work with, very caring towards his students, and a clever teacher. He earned my respect as a former principal, and as a friend. We had good laughs together. I am very very sad to hear of his passing. A good man, a great teacher and a all around stand up guy. My heart goes out to Deanne and her family. You are in my prayers.

Dear Deanne and family,
Tom and I were deeply saddened by the news of Simon's passing. His calm influence, quick humor, and steady leadership made such a positive impact on us as two new-to-the-north teachers. And his warm, easygoing, and unassuming personality made it so easy to be connect with him as friends. His personal and professional qualities were ones that inspired everyone around him to be better versions of themselves. When we think back to our early years in the NWT, you and Simon are keystones in those memories and we are grateful to have counted you both as colleagues and friends. We wish you peace and gentleness in the coming weeks and months as you navigate this new reality without Simon and send our most sincere condolences. Simon's great legacy is the wonderful family he built with you. May your love for one another give you the strength and courage to face the coming days, months, and years.

I was so sorry to hear of Simon's passing. I was lucky enough to be a teammate and friend of Simons from our teens up through Senior ball. We played on the CB Dodgers back in the the day. It was a team of guys from all over Cape Breton who didn't really know each other. Spending every summer day together over a couple of years and travelling all over the Northeast together we became more of a family. Every family needs a glue and that guy was Simon for us. He was the guy who had the funny comment, supportive word or just listened. He had that knack. I know that he continued that with his family and in his career at his schools.
The last time I saw him was a number of years ago in Europe of all places and I posted:
July 6, 2016 ·
"Just ran into an old friend at the train station in a little village in italy. We played cb dodgers, then w the ramblers. Havent since him since our last game in 96. He lives 25 mins away back home but we just havent crossed paths!! Coincidence"
We hadn't seen each other for years to that point. We laughed at the randomness of it all. We talked like old friends do for 5 minutes, said we should get together at home, then headed in separate directions. We never did get together but that was a pretty nice last memory I have of him.

Dear Deanne, Peggy, Lauren and Jane and family,
Sending love, comfort and my deepest condolences to you all. To know Simon was to know someone who cared deeply for all those around him. He hired me for my first teaching contract back in 2015 and his support and belief in me set me on a path to a career that I love. For that, I will be forever grateful. His belief in all the teachers, students and staff at REC was steadfast. He brought calm insight to even the most difficult of situations, inspired those around him to excellence, and had a strong sense of justice. And, of course, we cannot forget his dry sense of humour--he could always lighten a difficult situation with some well-timed humour!
Please know that his impact on those around him was and is deeply felt; his memory will continue on in the hearts of many. Wishing you peace and comfort at this difficult time.

Dear Gatto Family,
My thoughts go out to you at this time. I met Simon for the first time three years ago as I was beginning a new supportive position with the school board. From day one I knew he cared a lot about his students and always had the mindset that it takes a team/family to get students to where they need to go. As I got to know him better we would joke about the roller coaster ride of being Toronto Maple Leaf's fan. His kind thoughtful heart will be missed.
Sorry for your loss,

Meeting Simon when I was a terrified fellow elementary school student at Central School in NW in 1980 or 81- it was clear that he was a port in a storm, kind and gentle soul recognizing even then how others around him were feeling. This carried through to his high-school friendships and university - we certainly knew each other to graduation at BEC and we had so many mutual close friends as well - we often had jokes between us about our "Central" lineage and whatever side of the tracks you were supposed to come from.
If the world could find your version of the best side of the tracks Simon we would all be in a better place. I am so sorry for everyone who is feeling this loss - sending all of the "Central" love and thanks there is for the kindness he shared in this world.

Our heartfelt and sincere condolences on Simon's passing. Mere words fail to placate the bitter reality of a too soon taken son, husband and father. But perhaps it might be comforting to share with you our thoughts and feelings for the fine young man he was. Selica and I followed this eight year old baseball player all the years through the ranks to the senior level. As his coach I spent many hours learning who he was and more importantly knowing what he might become. Simon's obituary clearly gives evidence of his success. The plethora of warm regards from those he touched tells the story of a life well lived, albeit too brief. He was a man who among those who knew him was an exemplary person. May God rest his soul. Mr. Gatto was the best math teacher I ever had (Hants North, 2005/2006). He was funny and patient and did his best to get us to enjoy math class. He was thoughtful and kind; on quiz days he let us bring in treats (to make quizzes hurt less) and he even took turns bringing in food. Our favourite was when he brought in his chocolate chip banana muffins. They were so good, I got the recipe and still make them today. I think fondly of him whenever I mix them up. He was a great person and I am sorry for your loss.
