My condolences to John's family. I was lucky enough to have John as my Supervisor at the Hector Exhibit Centre during the summers of 1983 and 1984. I always found him to be fair and friendly. I was struck by his thoughtfulness. Whenever I would ask a question he would stop whatever he was doing and think about what I had asked before he responded. Above all, he was a kind and gentle person. It has been around 40 years since we worked together but I still tell the story of my first day working for John at the Exhibit Centre. I arrived for my shift and met John for the first time. The first task I was given involved painting four wooden benches that would eventually be distributed around the Centre's ground. John walked me up to the old barn behind the McCulloch House and showed me the benches, the can of paint and everything else I would need. He promptly left me to my work and after scraping the benches I opened the gallon of paint he had purchased. To my surprise when I opened the can I was confronted with the brightest purple paint I had ever seen. I felt the colour was not very suitable for the benches but since it was my first day on the job I decided it best if I did not start things off by questioning the boss. Away I went, painting all day. Four benches, two coats each, very purple. John came up around four o'clock to see how things were going and almost jumped when he saw the colour of the benches. He said something about that wasn't colour he wanted. He had actually asked for something in more of a brown. Then the funny thing happened. He stood back, started rubbing that big beard of his, thought about it for a moment or two and declared happily..." I like it" . And that was that purple benches for the museum grounds. That was the John Young I remember. I left Pictou after I graduated from Acadia and sadly lost contact with John. I have, however, thought of him fondly through the years. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. Geoff Hyson

Hi David I was a CCA at the Magnolia. John was an amazing man. He would share stories of his life; his family, his boys, going to Woodstock. He would alway tell me to watch one particular movie; Big little Man staring Dustin Hoffman which I did and enjoyed. I will miss him alway and think of him often. ❤

Hi,David.... we met years ago when John and I went to the Art College in the late '60's, and we spent some time in beautiful Pictou.... your mother made us blueberry pancakes for breakfast!
John was always so great with my little kids, they loved him, and so did I. I'm so sorry that you've lost your brother, and so sorry that I lost touch with him! I'm so sorry, too, that we've lost such an amazing artist!❤️

How very sad I am for you, David! I remember babysitting for you and Johnny, as he was called back then, when I was in high school. You were the cutest, sweetest, little boys, and it was such a pleasure for me to care for you. You have had so many losses including Sandy, my brother. You and Ruby are in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Nancy MacLean Doherty

i Am a CCA at the Magnolia and John and I shared a mutual love of Simon and Garfunkel. I’ll be thinking of him while listening to them. “Like A Bridge Over Troubled Waters” comes to mind, but I know John would rather hear “Fifty Ways To Leave A Lover” - his favourite, he loved that beat

I would like to send my condolences to John's family. I attended school with John and David I grew up in Pictou. I just happened to be checking the obituary on line in the Chronicle herald. I have often wondered how and where people from Pictou lives turned out. It sounds like John lived a good life from the information I read in his obituary.

I am very saddened to learn of the passing of my friend John. I have many fond memories of John and still have several pieces of his work when he ran an art and framing business in Pictou.
Cruising around town in his fathers O,ldsmobile
, hanging out on the beach at the Youngs family cottage or the trips to Halifax or PEI are a few that come to mind.
My deep condolences to Dave and all of Johns family during this difficult time. May it ease your sadness to know that many others share in your grief in Johns passing.
Farewell my friend. Rest in peace.
Danny
