MURPHY, Lydia Mae – age 95, of Upper Nine Mile River, passed away surrounded by the love of her family on January 7, 2020 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Renfrew Gold Mines, she was a daughter of the late Vance and Hilda (Thompson) Custance. In her earlier years, she was a teacher, mostly in one room schoolhouses and enjoyed sharing stories of this time in her life. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother - known to her family as Grammie. She loved to laugh and had a wonderful sense of humour. She and her loving husband Harold spent 53 years together until his passing in 2009. She possessed a wealth of information about her community and its history and was often called upon to verify information and identify folks in old photos, etc. She was the last known living person to have been born in Renfrew Gold Mines. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (Stan) Brown; grandchildren, Ian (Brenda) Thrones, Amy Thrones; great grandchildren, Jaxon White, Addison White and Vance Thrones; sister, Margaret (Hugh) Creelman; nieces, Christene Creelman and Brenda Creelman. Visitation will take place beginning 1pm Monday, January 13 until time of service at 2pm both in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie, Rev. Martin Reid officiating..
