Obituary of John Wayne Woods
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
WOODS, John Wayne “Woody” , age 70 of Stewiacke /Beaver Bank passed away April 11 at Colchester Hospital, Truro. Born in River Hebert, NS he was a son of the late John Burton Herman “Jack” Woods of Rothwell, NB and Margaret Ethel Woods (Coffin) of River Hebert, NS.
John had a rewarding career as an aviation technician in the navy and served on HMCS Bonaventure before changing trades to that of flight engineer, a career that he loved and remained in until his retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1988. That wasn’t the end of his work life though because he went on to serve with the Commissionaires until 2012 then NSCC until really retiring in 2016. But all the time and energy he put into his work life he put much more into his family and home life. John was in perpetual renovation mode and up until last week had several big projects on the go. He spent endless hours in his well-stocked garage and probably owned 2 or 3 versions of every tool and always said if he couldn’t fix it, it was garbage. John (aka Guppy – so named by his grandson Christian) adored his grandsons, Christian and Nicholas and spent almost every weekend with them since they were born.
John Wayne Woods “Woody” was most of all honest, loyal and true—a good husband, father, friend and neighbour. His favourite band was the Beach Boys, his favourite meal was barbeque steak and potato salad, his favourite beverage was Schooner and his favourite activity was prowling the hardware stores. He loved a cool summer evening watching the sunset or a slow walk in a light snowfall after dark and would laugh so hard watching our dog play.
He is survived by wife, Anna Nibby-Woods, son, Russell and daughter, Shelly all of Stewiacke. Two grandsons Christian and Nicholas; sisters-in-law Carol Woods and Jackie Nibby; nephew, Adrian; nieces, Susan, Cathy and Colleen, and cousin, Catherine-Ann. He is predeceased by brother, Gordon Wallace Woods.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Home. A Celebration of John's Life will be held in Stewiacke Baptist Church, 112 Main Street East on April 22 from 1 - 2pm with lunch and refreshments afterwards.
