WOTHERSPOON (McNEIL), Irene Cecilia , age 73, Halifax, formerly of Belnan, passed
away peacefully on Friday November 11, 2016 at the Palliative Care Unit in the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax.
Born in England, she was the loving wife to her late husband William Wotherspoon and a daughter of the late Thomas and the late Irene (Ferguson) McNeil.
Irene was a member of the Girl Guides of Canada for 65 years and was awarded a “Life Membership” for her service. She was a “Life Member” of the Women’s Institute of Nova Scotia, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 37 years; a member and past officer of the Order of the Eastern Star; worked with the East Hants Community Health Board for 12 years and was a Board Member for the Colchester East Hants Health Authority for 2 terms. Volunteering was a huge part of Irene’s life, which was not surprising since she had such a giving nature. Her volunteer work had her actively involved in the Boy Scouts of Canada; the Home and School Association; Colchester East Hants School Board and was a member on many other boards and committees throughout her life. Irene deeply loved her family; was a devout Roman Catholic; loved anything to do with the Royal Family; reading and knitting and of course Elvis Presley.
She was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by all who knew her, especially by her son Duncan Wotherspoon, her daughter Heather (Steve) Andrews, her sister Marie (Patrick) Arbuckle, her brothers Thomas (Kathy) McNeil, David McNeil and Jim (Mike) McNeil, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband William, she was predeceased by a sister, Patricia Duncan.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9pm, with a Legion Memorial Service at 7pm on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10am Friday, November 18, 2016 at St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church, 251 Highway 2, Enfield, Father Michael Walsh officiating
Interment will take place at Sandy Hill Cemetery, Belnan. A reception will be held in the Ettinger Funeral Home hospitality area following the committal.
Memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Girl Guides of Canada.
