LAWRENCE, Mildred Viola, age 94, Lattie's Brook, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2013, at Vimy Court, Bible Hill, NS, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Latties Brook, October 21, 1918, she was a daughter of the late James and Susan (Burns) Burton. Millie graduated from the Nova Scotia Normal College in 1937 and taught for two years in local one- room schools in Georgefield and Five Mile River. On July 10, 1940, she married a local farmer, James Lawrence, and they raised 6 children on the Lawrence farm. Together, Millie and Jim lived long, healthy and productive lives, had a love of learning and understood the importance of giving their time and talents to their church and community. MIllie organized the Sunday School every year and worked in the Sewing Club, at Community suppers, the LOBA Lodge, Quilting Bees, Card Parties and especially enjoyed the local dances. After her youngest child started school, Millie returned to teaching. Her last 12 years of teaching were spent in the Primary classroom at Kennetcook District school. MIllie was very skilled in quilting and knitting, producing many mittens, socks, hats and beautiful quilts for her family and for local craft sales. It was extremely important for Millie to maintain strong family ties through visiting, writing letters and phone calls. She kept diaries faithfully for the last 20 years of her life and these are kept as family treasures along with her many picture albums. Millie will forever be a valuable example for her family to follow. Millie is survived by her children, Caleb (Maureen)Lawrence, retired Anglican Archbishop, Nanaimo, BC; Bert (Barb) Lawrence, Wellington; Nancy Anne (Jim)MacKay, Chester; Rick (Gloria) Lawrence, Beaverbank; Carl (Judy) Lawrence, Halifax; Wilfred (Barbara) Lawrence, Mayfield, PEI. Grandchildren, Fiona (Doug) Maki; Karen (Rob) Goguillot; Sean (Karine) Lawrence; Trevor(Diane) Lawrence; Krista (Dave) Lawrence; Susan (John) Bartlett; Steven (Monique) Anthony; Scott (Christine) Lawrence; Troy (Elizabeth) Lawrence; Michelle (Todd) Lawrence; and Ross (Jodi) Lawrence; Chosen granddaughter, Nancy Lynn Anthony. Great Grandchildren Jylian, James and Dawson Bartlett; Cam Maki; Jenna and Evan Goguillot; Bradley and Emma Anthony; Gavin and Amelia Lawrence; Elias Lawrence; Paula and Pierre Lawrence. And Baby Keigan Lawrence. Millie was predeceased by her husband James, great-granddaughter Bryanne, sisters Alice McDuffy, Helen Lindsay, Ruth Caldwell, Rhoda Gagnon and Jean Lattie; brothers Roy Burton, Earl Burton and Borden Burton. Visitation will be from 6-9 PM, Tuesday, July 2 in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie, NS. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 3 at 2 PM in St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, Latties Brook, Rev. Bev Devouge officiating. Interment in the church cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, The Alzheimer's Society, or to a charity of choice.
