BOND, ROBERT FREDERICK - 1917-2014 Bond, Robert F. - Upper Nine Mile River, Hants Co., passed away peacefully Aug. 16, 2014 at Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, Halifax, NS. He was in his 97th year. Robert was born in Upper Rawdon and lived all his life in the areas of Upper Rawdon, East Gore and Upper Nine Mile River. He was the eldest son of Harry and Muriel (Custance) Bond. Robert was a Veteran of WWII and belonged to the West Nova Scotia Regiment and the Algonquin Regiment. During his time in England, he met and married Dorothy Hooper, the love of his life. After recovering from a serious wound inflicted at Caen, France in 1944, Robert returned home to a farming life and was followed a few months later by Dorothy and their baby son, Michael. In 1956, Robert and Dorothy left the farm and bought a small store in East Gore which Dorothy ran, while Robert went to work as a carpenter until his retirement. Robert was a dedicated family man and very community minded. He was a member of the Upper Rawdon United Church and past Elder. In his retirement years, he enjoyed bowling, gardening, trailering and golfing at Ken-Wo Golf Club where he achieved a Hole-In-One. As a widower, Robert continued to enjoy frequent trips to Tim Horton's, especially when accompanied by his nephew, Gregory Bond. Robert could always be called upon to assist anyone that needed help. He was very generous with his time and always enjoyed gatherings with his family and friends. Robert is survived by a son, Michael (Donna), Kingston, NS; a daughter, Marilyn (Charlie) Baldwin, Dartmouth, NS.; beloved grandchildren, David (Whitney), Ottawa, Ontario; James (Holly),Dartmouth, NS; Tina Bond-Morse, Kingston NS; Christopher (Sarah) Baldwin, Dartmouth, NS; Patricia Baldwin, Truro ,NS; Lisa Baldwin, Dartmouth, NS; great-grandchildren, Michael, Oliver and Elena Bond, Emily Bond and Rachel Morse; brothers, James (Elsie); Donald (Jean); sisters, Marjorie Weir and Mary Withrow. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years Dorothy, and brothers Carl, Lloyd and Gordon. The family wishes to thank the Staff of 3West at Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, Halifax for their assistance over recent years with Robert's excellent care; also, many thanks to the Department of Veterans' Affairs for their timely professionalism and assistance with Robert's requirements. Arrangements have been entrusted to Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie, NS. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2014 from 7-9pm at Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie. Funeral Service will be held at 2pm Thursday, August 21, 2014 at Upper Rawdon United Church. A reception will be held at the Upper Rawdon Fire Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Upper Rawdon United Church or a charity of your choice.
