CALDWELL, Jean Elizabeth - 81, Fort Ellis, passed away at home on Wednesday, July 16, 2014. Born in Mill Village, she was a daughter of the late H. Guy and Gladys (Spares) MacKay. A teacher by nature, she attended the Nova Scotia Normal College and taught and substituted in Colchester and East Hants area in the 1960's and 1970's. She also worked with children tutoring in English with a remedial reading program. Together with Ian, she ran a Bed and Breakfast in the 80's and 90's hosting tourists from all over the world and also providing lodging for linesmen and construction workers. She was an avid gardener and kept busy with a greenhouse and a vegetable garden, sharing with family, friends and the food bank every year. Her love of animals was vast, she was known to rescue birds, cats and dogs alike. Growing up on a farm she enjoyed all types of livestock, her home by the river, and the country life in general. She is survived by sons Harold (Alice), Earl (JoAnn), Brian Caldwell; daughter Karen (Bert) Baxter; grandchildren, Steven, Sandra, Sheila and Sarah; great grandchildren Jordan, Serenity and Nevaeh; sister Irma Mildred Barnes; several nieces and a nephew. She was predeceased by her husband Ian, sisters, Claire, Beverley, Dora and Anna. Cremation has taken place under the care of Ettinger Funeral Home. A graveside service 4 pm, Monday, July 21, in Brookside Cemetery, Mill Village. Donations in Jeans memory may be made to the Colchester Hospice Society, 89 Queen Street, Truro, NS, B2N 2B2.
