The extended Carter Family is sad to bid farewell to our beloved Aunt Marita. We all wish we had gotten back to West Gore to see her one more time. We have many fond memories of Aunt Marita, from our few visits to Nova Scotia and also of her many trips to New England with her sister, our Aunt Mary. Even after she turned 100 years old, she would still call our mother, Gladys MacDougall Carter, to visit on the phone and see how Mom was doing. On the last trip we took to Nova Scotia, Aunt Marita drove with us to the old MacDougall Homestead and we stood on the property, next to the house, looking down over the hillside to railroad tracks, imagining what it must have been like for her to grow up there. Happy Memories! To those of her extended family that we do not know, please understand that those far away who loved her as well will surely feel a sense of loss at her passing. She was a cherished part of our MacDougall clan.

Marita was married in July of 1954. I had travelled from Cleveland, Ohio with my six month old son, Douglas to visit my parents and family in Nova Scotia. I took my baby to Marita's wedding in West Gore 60 years ago. It was a lovely sunny day and the bride and groom were a happy couple. Marita had known me since I was born, being a double cousin, related through the Wallaces and MacDougalls. She will be missed!

A special woman, a life well lived. Many's the quart of blueberries we picked here on our hills ... the same hills she roamed as a child ... and delivered to the little house at the foot of the hill. Rest in peace, dear lady, your memory will live on!
