Obituary of Doreen Elizabeth Knockwood

KNOCKWOOD, Doreen Elizabeth - age 74 of the Indian Brook First Nation, peacefully joined her relatives and ancestors in the spirit world just before sunrise on April 27th, 2024.  Doreen was much loved and a respected Elder to her family, community and nation.  She was the oldest of six siblings of the late Annie E Knockwood (Beadle) and Keptin Irvin W Knockwood.  She is survived by brother Stephen (Stevie) J Knockwood and sisters Annette J Knockwood and Sharon M Knockwood.  Previously deceased siblings Benjamin Thomas (Hutt) Knockwood, Garfield (Gary) Knockwood and sister-inlaw Colleen Knockwood met their big sister with open arms to take her place with them.  Doreen was a proud mom to Brian B Knockwood, gram to Bryson B Knockwood (Kate) and great-gram to Alita E Knockwood.   She forever loved her godchildren Tricia Fultz, Kelley Knockwood, Jason McDonald, Shawn Knockwood, Michaela Knockwood, Harley Augustine and adopted godchild Carmen Michael.   Doreen also had many loving nieces and nephews who she deeply cherished, Patricia, Annie, Doreen, Krissy, Lena, Ivan, Megan, Caitlin, Tianna, Dawn and Arvin.

Doreen lived a full, amazing life and was the world to many.  Family was her unspoken priority and so was her lifelong commitment to community.  She was proudly one of the first Mi’kmaq to walk across the stage at Hants East Rural High and served her community of Sipeke’katik for over 50 years in both administration and with a seat on Council.   Her spirituality was respectfully both traditional and roman catholic.  Enough can not be said about Doreen, she selflessly helped so many people, and also touched many hearts with her genuine kindness.

Doreen gracefully let us know what she wanted and how she wanted her passing ceremony to be done.  It’s an honour for us all to respect her wishes.  She will be cremated and will be resting and watching over us next to her parents and siblings.

Visitation for Doreen will be at the Ettinger’s Funeral Home in Shubenacadie from 6-9pm on Sunday April 28th and from 11am-9pm on Monday April 29th. Prayers will be at 7:30 pm each evening.

The funeral service and ceremony for Doreen will be held at the Saint Kateri Church in Indian Brook on Tuesday April 30th at 10:00am. The service may be viewed at: https://event.forgetmenotceremonies.com/ceremony?c=7e53c578-302e-43ab-b959-16eafbb1300b

An online Salite will be organized by Lesley Knockwood, and Doreen has arranged for a giveaway ceremony during the feast following the church service.
