Obituary of Florence Alice Hebb-Mercer

HEBB-MERCER, Florence Alice -  age 81, Shubenacadie, passed away in the Mira Nursing Home, Truro, on July 22,2022. Born on the Burgess Farm, Shubenacadie, she was the second daughter, of the late Arthur W. and Emeline J. (Hyson) Hebb.

She had one sister Barbara Ann (Hebb) Petrin (deceased), one brother-in-law, Claude Petrin; one niece, Ann Hebb Tonya (Petrin) Brault, one nephew by marriage, Gary Brault, one great niece, Samantha Barbara Ellen Brault, all of Saint – Bruno, Quebec.

Florence received her education in Shubenacadie, after which she worked in the original “Shubenacadie Drug Store” for Stanley Malcolm Etter and Cora Etter for a year. She worked at the V.G. Hospital Pharmacy under Kathleen Kinley for 5 months, leaving to take a stenography course at the Nova Scotia Trade School, Halifax, graduating with honours in 1960. She was secretary treasurer and entertainment convener of her class and wrote and gave the “Class-Prophecy” speech at the graduation dinner and ball in the ballroom of the Lord Nelson Hotel, Halifax, July 1960.

She worked for the Halifax Chronicle Herald and Mail Star in the Circulation Department as a bookkeeper, Eaton’s Accounts office and lastly Saint Mary’s University in the Circulation Department on the main desk under Mrs. Iva Margeson. Florence loved the people she worked with and the people she served.

She was married in 1987 to James Harvey Mercer, son of the late Richard Mercer and Florence Mercer of Lushes Bight Long Island, Newfoundland. She and her husband resided in Shubenacadie and Lunenburg. She loved to write and wrote the History of Burgess Farm, letters and cards for every occasion 30 to 40 at a time to relatives and friends. She was a great conversationist and story teller of years gone by. She will always be remembered by her warm, witty, jovial, friendly and loving personality by her family, chosen family and friends who knew her as “Auntie Flo”. 

She always maintained that it doesn’t matter what you have to do in life as long as you do it to the best of your ability and in doing so you have a great feeling of  satisfaction and accomplishment. “You never lose by being generous and kind – you always gain”. Florence was a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, Shubenacadie.

A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, July 27th, 2022, in Preeper Hill Cemetery, Shubenacadie.
