I have so many memories and stories about Polly that it is difficult to choose just a few things to say. The very first time I met her was 31 years ago on a winter night. It was 2:00 a.m. and Larry brought me to the house. I was terrified about going in and waking anybody up. Polly came into the kitchen, Larry introduced me, and right away she shuffled me over to the heat register and told me, "You must be frozen. Get over here and get warm." I was kind of shocked to get that kind of reception in the middle of the night. Her door truly was open for anyone (family, friends, acquaintances, or strangers). Her home was your home, and whatever she had was sincerely offered.
Polly had a such a devotion to anything she believed in and anyone she cared about…and there were many fortunate people who fell under that umbrella. There is nothing she would stop at in order to help. She was so selfless, and would do without in order to make sure that those she cared about were happy. Her work ethic, honesty, compassion, and sense of responsibility are shining stars in her character that I will always admire.
Over the years, we have shared many, many laughs and sometimes tears. I have so enjoyed the stories of her life that she has shared with me and I know I am blessed to have been one of those who Polly opened her heart to. She truly treasured the small things in life…picking mayflowers or a drawing from a grandchild. She was so touched if someone gave her anything and her thank you was generally said with a tear in her eye.
Fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren have had the very best God could give for a Nan and a Great-Nan. Her devotion and love for her grandchildren was unwavering. She got many crazy hair-do's, colored more coloring books, had her nails painted and make-up put on, read a ton of books, and would rather be down on the floor playing with cars or Barbies. She was the best playmate any child could wish for and that is exactly what she wanted to be doing. Brandon absolutely adored his grandmother. He would say to her, "Pooollllly" and she would respond, "Brandon Crandon." He loved doing that and it didn't matter how many times he said it, she would answer him. Long after I would have given up on that game, Polly wasn't stopping until Brandon had enough.
For the rest of us big people, we would never tackle any problem or chore alone if she was aware of it. She would be the first one in to help and the last one finishing up. She could make us adults feel like children sometimes too if we stepped out of line because she wasn't long pointing it out. We all have cherished memories of our mistakes and Polly giving us her opinion, and we've all shared a lot of laughs with her talking about those mistakes.
She was a mother bear with her family and I admire her for the life she lived. We have all lost a very special person, but she has given each of us a heart full of memories and wisdom to draw from. Chances are, I'll never know anyone quite like her again in my lifetime. Alzheimer's is a terrible disease, but it is not all that I will remember. I will remember the vibrant, spunky, lady I met 31 years ago and I have such admiration and respect for who she was over those 31 years.
I guess I don't have any particular story to share here, just how much Polly has meant to me and what a remarkable woman I thought she was. I love you and I will miss you Polly.
