KEYES, Frederick Allan - age 91 of Lantz, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2016 surrounded by his loving family in the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Hospital, Halifax. Born in Elmsdale, he was a son of the late Harris and Reta (Isenor) Keyes. Fred served in the Airforce during the Second World War. He was trained as an airframe mechanic and worked for Ferry Aviation and IMP before beginning his construction career. He oversaw the construction of the present Shaw Group office building in Lantz and he started the Maplewood subdivision in Lantz with his son Brent in 1980. In his retirement years he took pride in his fine wood-working projects and he enjoyed his winters in Florida with Hazel. He was an avid country music fan and especially loved George Jones. Fred will be remembered as a true gentleman and a hard worker by all who knew him. A devoted family man, he thought the world of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Hazel; sons, Clarey (Marjorie), Brent (Jo-Anna) both of Lantz; grandchildren, Karla (Alex) Longford, St. Lazare, QC, Mark (Kelly) Keyes, Belnan, Gregory (Sara) Keyes, Belnan, Kelly (Rob) Bitar, Belnan; great grandchildren, Sarah, Isaac, Luke, Owen, Brayden, Sofia, Simon and Sebastian; sister, Jean Ashley, Lantz; sisters in-law, Doreen “Toots” Keyes and Mabel Keyes; several nieces and nephews; He was predeceased by sister Helen Stevens; brothers, Richard, Lexie and Ronald. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9pm Tuesday, August 23 in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2 Shubenacadie, from where a funeral service will be held 2pm Wednesday, August 24, Rev. Canon David Fletcher officiating. Interment will be held in Sandy Hill Cemetery, Belnan. The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Bethune and the nurses and staff of 5 East for the exceptional care given to Fred over the last five years.
