Obituary of Shirley Kathleen Young

Please share a memory of Shirley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
YOUNG, Shirley Kathleen – Our beautiful mother drifted away with grace at the age of 95 in The Magnolia Continuing Care Centre, Enfield on December 29, 2019. Born in Grand Lake, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Maud (Osborne) Palmer. Shirley was an amazing woman who hunted and fished with her pal and sister in law, Helen Palmer, as well as with her husband, Ralph and their friends. She was an avid sports fan and a member of the Oakfield Golf and Country Club. Each weekend we would gather to enjoy Mom’s skills at cuisine and her apple pies, all of which were exceptional, as well as her pickles and jams that she lovingly shared. Shirley was a very talented lady as a seamstress and used her great skills when working for the Tartan House in Halifax. Her leisure time was spent knitting and doing needlework. She was especially proud of her petit-point pictures. Shirley also enjoyed bingo with her friends. She had a wonderful sense of humour which was enjoyed by the workers at the Magnolia. Shirley is survived by her children, Glenda (Jim) Osborne, Margo (Glenn) Wood, Allan (Shelley), Garnet (Annette); grandchildren, Trevor Austin, Kent Austin, Benjie Young, Jamie Young, Jonathan Young, Erik Young, Christina Wood; 9 great grandchildren. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Ralph; sisters, Doris Todd, Jean Miller; brothers, Gasper, Glen, Don; her loving companion, Badger. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. Visitation will be held 6-8 pm Friday, January 3rd, 2020 in St. Margaret’s Anglican Church, 5639 Nova Scotia Trunk 2, Oakfield, from where a funeral service will take place 11am Saturday, January 4th, 2020, Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. The family wishes to extend their gratitude for the care and support Shirley received at the Magnolia, especially to those who worked at Sand Dollar Cottage, and to Dr. Sheehy. Family Flowers only please. Donations in memory of Shirley may be made to St. Margaret’s Anglican Church, Oakfield.
