Obituary of Laurie Elmer Barr
BARR, Laurie Elmer-age 65, passed away suddenly at his home in Belnan on December 10th, 2018.
Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Bessie and Elmer Barr.
Laurie was a larger than life man with a quick and bold laugh. He loved nothing more than playing host to his family and friends, and the more the merrier. He was as loving and kind as he was bold and tough. Those who knew him well can tell of many stories, told to them by the people he quietly helped over the years. Laurie began his career as a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer, serving for 12 years, most of it spent working undercover doing drug and homicide investigations in Hamilton and Toronto, often working underground for months at a time. After retiring from the RCMP, he returned to Nova Scotia, where he spent the next 35 years running several successful businesses, including, most recently, Whistlers Pub in Stewiacke.
Laurie is survived by his son, Laurie Brown (Michelle) and granddaughter, Maya of Hamilton, Ontario, the two greatest surprises and pleasures of his life. He is also survived by his two sisters, Eileen Barr (Mel Green) and Reta Taylor (Bill). The closest of siblings they were never far from each other, even if separated by distance their bond kept them close. Laurie was also loved dearly by his niece and nephew, and his great nieces and nephews. He will also be well and truly missed by his loyal Labrador Tacara.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie from where visitation will be held Saturday, December 15, 2018 from 7 pm to 9 pm.
A graveside service will be held 1 pm on Sunday, December 16, 2018 in Brookside Cemetery, Shubenacadie, Reverend Martin Reid officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Laurie’s memory may be made to Third Place Transition House, Truro.
