Obituary of John Fitzpatrick Butt

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

BUTT, John Fitzpatrick “Buttsie” – age 81, of Enfield, passed away peacefully Oct 29th in Colchester East Hants Health Care Centre, Truro. Born in Dartmouth, he was a son of the late Henry and Marie (Holland) Butt.

John retired from Air Canada shortly after the birth of his first grandchild and devoted himself to fulfilling his very proud grandfather role. Just like his children, his grandchildren were the apples of his eye, and he spent many hours playing the lifeguard role and in later years, chauffeuring duties, as Poppa’s vocabulary lacked the word no.

John absolutely loved hockey, as members of his family can attest. It was hard to keep track of any one hockey game, as the master of the remote control skillfully monitored all televised games at once.

He enjoyed coaching hockey to many young men in The East Hants Gentleman’s League, as well as co-workers with the YHZ Air Canada Team in his younger years. His unique and humorous coaching abilities were much appreciated.

Buttsie operated BJ’s Takeout - Home of the Buttsie Burger - in Enfield for many years, where he enjoyed meeting and greeting many people.

John was a very active member of the Enfield & Elmsdale District Lions Club, heavily involved in the Christmas Tree sales, & Calendar campaigns, as well as Lifeline installations. He was also committed to the E H Horne School Preservation Society. Buttsie was a true believer in giving back to the community and volunteering.

John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly; daughters, Kimmie (Glenn Roach), Enfield; and Debbie Butt, Calgary; grandchildren, Gracyn and Cassidy Roach; brothers, Raymond and Robert. He was predeceased by his siblings, Lillian, Doris, Sheila, Leo, Kenny.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Doctors & Nurses at the Palliative Care Wing, CEHHC and Dr. Bruce Montgomery.

Special Thanks to Son-In-Law Glenn Roach -There’s a quiet strength about you that we noticed from the start, and a willingness to lend a hand, for everyone around you, for the ones you hold most dear, you’re a source of love and comfort.

Michael Walsh officiating. A reception will follow in the Enfield Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Buttsie may be made to the Palliative Care Centre, CEHHC, Truro.
