BEATTIE, Dawson Carl - Age 88 of Maitland, passed away September 25, 2017 at home. He was born in South Maitland to the late John and Gladys (Archibald) Beattie. Dawson spent many years in the trucking industry, and for 35 years he worked for the Department of Transportation using heavy equipment. He was a member of the former St. David’s United Church in Maitland, and was committed to improving the church and hall properties. He will be remembered for his infectious laughter and brilliant smile. Dawson and Claire spent many winters in various parts of Florida, especially in Largo with their friends, Clarence and Kathryn Cox. During this time, they made many lasting friendships with people who also enjoyed vacationing in the sunshine state. Dawson recently celebrated 65 years of marriage with the love of his life, Claire (Tomlinson). Dawson was a proud father of two sons, Gary (Grace) and Ross (Tracey). He has been a loving grandfather to grandsons, Scott (Tammy), Trent (Louise) and Joshua, Matthew and Justin (whose mother is Maureen). He is the step-grandfather to Chandler and Raeleigh Doyle, and he is also a great grandfather of four - Ryan, Colton, Meghan and Sarah. Dawson is also survived by sisters, Helen (Henry) Hartlen, Linda (Laurie) Bartlett; sister in-law, Pauline and brother’s in-law, Mick (Joan) Tomlinson and Gus Ratchford, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by siblings, Murray, Clifford (Muriel), Charles (Helen), John, Thelma (Reg) Ellis and Caroline Ratchford. Visitation will be held 7-9pm Thursday, September 28, 2017 in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie from where a Celebration of Life will be held 2pm Friday, September 29, Rev. Martin Reid officiating. A reception will follow in the hospitality area of the funeral home. A private family committal service will take place at Oak Island Cemetery. The family extends their thanks and appreciation to the VON and palliative care personnel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Maitland Community Cemeteries, care of Anne Patterson, 23 Hillside Ct., Lower Sackville, NS B4E 1B2.
