Every family has someone who seems woven into its very fabric—the person who connects generations, holds decades of stories, and makes certain places feel like home simply because she is there. For our family, that person was Ruby Mae Bent (Grant) who left this world August 11, 2026.

Ruby was the centre of our family, our families home base. Everyone just sort of revolved around her. We would stop in, and as long as you brought the dogs to visit too, she was happy to see you, we called, we told her what was going on.

She could be nearly blind and still somehow notice that you had missed a spot while cleaning. We never did figure that one out. She liked her house tidy, herself well dressed and her nails done, and she had absolutely no intention of letting age interfere with any of that.

Ruby was also famous in the family for “I know that.” We think her middle name was maybe even “stubborn” which is probably the reason she attained the age of 88+ considering her health concerns.

The farmhouse was Ruby’s command centre. From her favourite spot by the window, she could keep tabs on the horses, the property, who was coming up the driveway and whatever else she felt required her attention that day. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always coming and going, and that’s exactly how she liked it.

She wasn’t the gushy type, and she certainly wasn’t going to spend all day telling you how wonderful you were. Ruby loved you in a much more Ruby-like way. She’d tell you what she thought, gave solid advice and would make sure you knew she loved you.

For 88 years, Ruby did things her way. She worked hard, raised a family, helped people buy homes and start businesses over the years at the Royal Bank, danced, played cards, spent 16 winters in Florida, kept her nails done, kept an eye on everybody and loved every minute of it.

A heartfelt thank you to the compassionate care givers who helped make it possible for Ruby to stay in her home until the end.

Ruby is survived by her daughter, Vicki Sullivan (Keith); son, Leonard Bent (Stephanie); grandchildren, Matthew (Roberta), Nicole (Greg ), Kaylee (Connor); great grandchildren Roderick, Owen, Lloyd, Fay, Abigail, Emily; sisters, Susan, Joan, Jean (Eric); many nieces and nephews

She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd; special friend Albert, brothers Jim and Keith, sister Joyce

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. The family will be having a private graveside service.

“Remember I loved you all so much, thanks for being so good to me. Take care of each other and always tell them you love them. Hugs are important too”
