BEST, Clarence (Clar) Malcolm – age 84, of Stewiacke, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro. Born in Tack's Beach/Best’s Harbour, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Ned and Ella (Brown) Best.

Clarence began his career working aboard cable vessels, helping lay telecommunications cables around the world. He later joined CN Marine Atlantic, serving as an Engineer on the North Sydney–Argentia route. During his time with the company, while serving as a Junior Engineer aboard the Ambrose Shea, an engine malfunction sparked a fire. Demonstrating remarkable courage and quick thinking, Clarence shut himself inside the engine room to cut off the fuel supply, suffering burns in the process. His actions prevented the fire from becoming far more serious, and he was recognized by the Government of Newfoundland for his bravery.

After leaving CN Marine Atlantic, Clarence worked briefly as a supervisor at the Come By Chance Oil Refinery before relocating to Nova Scotia. There, he joined Maritime Paper Products in Burnside, where he worked as a Millwright for 28 years before retiring.

Following retirement, Clarence and Nessie returned to Newfoundland to enjoy life on the water. He loved fishing, boating, snowmobiling and exploring the coastline. Above all, Clarence cherished his family. known simply as "Poppy" to his grandchildren, he treasured every moment spent with them. No matter where he was or what he was doing, if one of his grandchildren needed him, he would return without hesitation. Eventually, Clarence and Nessie moved back to Nova Scotia to be closer to their family.

A gifted handyman with an incredible work ethic, there seemed to be nothing Clarence couldn't build or repair. He enjoyed taking on projects of every kind and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who asked.

Clarence is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Nessie; his sons, Dean (Krista), Derrick (Linda), and Jody (Kimberly); his beloved grandchildren, Jeremy, Brittany, Kalie, Nick, Josh, Grace, Sam; and 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Calvin (Gertie) and Ed (Wanda); and his sister, Marie (Don).

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Elk Court in Brookfield for their exceptional care, kindness, and compassion shown to Clarence.

He will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering dedication to his family, remarkable courage, and the willingness to help anyone in need. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Homes, Shubenacadie and Elmsdale. In keeping with Clarence's wishes, there will be no service.
