HINES, Olga “Bess” - 95 of Dutch Settlement, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026 at home surrounded by loved ones. Born in Dutch Settlement, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Pearl (Simpson) Hines.

Bess spent her life in the community she was born and loved. She was a cherished friend, neighbour, and familiar face to all and was known as a “mother to many”. She welcomed everyone with warmth, kindness and an open door so much so that her home was always THE gathering place that everyone went to. Bess was an exceptional cook, baker and wedding cake decorator.  She loved spending time knitting, being with family and friends, playing cards and bingo. She was also known to provide impromptu dance lessons in her living room and spent many years volunteering at the local fire department’s bingo.

She will be sadly missed by daughter Peggy (Frank), sons John, Norman, Laurie, and Clarence; her granddaughters, Lori (Troy) and Stacey (David); great-granddaughter, Casey (Mitchell); as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends

Besides her parents Bess was predeceased by her beloved husband, Vincent Hines; her infant sons, Carl and Lloyd; son-in-law, Frank; and her siblings, Lorna, Aubrey, Nina, Iris, Joyce, Auley, Dorthea, Errold, John, and Elizabeth.

Cremation has taken place under the care Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie and Elmsdale.

The family would like to thank all those who shared in Bess’s life and friendships over the years and to those who aided in her care over the last several months  

A graveside service will be held on Saturday June 27 at 11:00am at St. George’s Anglican Church in Dutch Settlement followed immediately by a reception in the church basement.
