NEWMAN, Sheila Pearl Mary – age 92, of Carroll’s Corner, NS, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on June 13, 2026, at the Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, Middle Musquodoboit, NS. She was the daughter of the late Alton and Nora (Maude) Preeper.

Sheila was well known throughout the Atlantic provinces, for her contribution to country and bluegrass music. Her strong country voice and her clean dobro picking was always a favorite with the audience. She played in many country and bluegrass festivals, benefit shows and you could see her frequently at the Nine Mile River Country Jamboree. Sheila was still picking and singing publicly, at the age of 90. Sheila was inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame in 2017.

Sheila is survived by her sons, Curtis, Jim (Danita), Paul (Janice); daughters, Jo-Ann (Floyd) Spicer, Glenda Roberts; son-in-law, John Ashley; sister, Dorothy Perrott; brother, Elwood/Jeep (Juanita) Preeper; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she adored; many nieces and nephews.

Sheila was predeceased by her loving husband, Fred; daughter, Bonnie Ashley; son-in-law, Derek Roberts; siblings who passed away at birth, Doris, Thelma, Rita and Aubrey, sisters, Theresa (Laird) Thiel, Nina (George) Turner; brothers, Bill (Peggy) Preeper and Allan (Lorraine) Preeper, brother-in-law, Henry Perrott.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger’s Funeral Home, Shubenacadie, NS.

In accordance with Sheila’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A private burial will be held with immediate family.

Many thanks to all the staff at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, for the love and care given to mom and the fantastic staff at the Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital who went the extra mile to make sure mom was always comfortable and sang along with her during her final days.  Your love and kindness did not go unnoticed. Thank you to friends and family for the cards and the hospital visits.
