In loving memory of Bernard ‘Bernie’ Wayne Smith

September 2, 1937 - June 7, 2026

With heavy hearts and grateful memories, we announce the passing of Bernard Wayne Smith, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was the son of the late Jessie Smith (Steeves) and Raymond Smith. 

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Geraldine, his partner, best friend, and the love of his life for nearly 54 years. Together they built a family that became his greatest joy.

He was a proud father to Kendall (Vickie), Jason (Emilie) and Kelli (Tommy), and a cherished father figure to Michelle (Branden). He was also a proud grandfather to Jenna, Brooklyne, Hunter, and Alyssa. Plus an honorary grandfather to Liam, Jayda, Carter, Ella, Aubree, and Selina. Recently, he achieved the new title of great grampie to Mateo. All held a special place in his heart. 

Being the eldest of eight siblings helped shape Bernie into the man so many knew and loved. His brothers and sisters remained a cherished part of his life, and he carried countless memories and told stories of their adventures and misadventures together. 

Bernie proudly served in the Royal Canadian Air Force for 28 years before beginning a second career with IMP Aerospace. While he served his country and worked hard throughout his life, he also took pride in volunteering as a dedicated lifetime member of Lions Club International. He devoted countless hours to serving his community and making life a little better for those around him. When not working or volunteering, Bernie could be found in his workshop building a new wooden creation, hunting, playing cards, reading Louis L’Amour, or simply sitting with family and friends solving the world’s problems one story at a time. His stories had a tendency to get better with each telling and occasionally grew in direct proportion to the number of drinks being shared. His life lessons were memorable not only for their wisdom, but also for the sprinkling of curse words that often accompanied them. Somehow, a lesson or story from Bernie just didn’t sound quite right without a few choice words mixed in for emphasis. There was always plenty of laughter, and memories made, both old and new. You know you were in the inner circle if you knew the coveted secret of the Palmers Pond poke. 

Per his wishes, he wants everyone to just be happy. 

No formal funeral service will be held. Burial and celebration of life will be held with family and close friends. 

In keeping with his spirit, we invite family and friends to remember him not with sadness alone, but with stories, laughter, and gratitude for the time we were lucky enough to share with him. 

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever a part of us. 

Bernie spent much of his life giving back to his community and helping those around him. In his memory, donations may be made to the Lions Club International or Alzheimer Society of Canada.
