Tribute from Willie and Faye Courtney,
One cannot think about tributes to Bernie (Lion Secretary Bernie) without the word "Champion" rising to the top.
The way he lived his life, whether it be military service or service to his fellow man, family, friends, or his community, service was paramount in his thoughts and deeds. His 35 continuous years as Shubie Lions Club Secretary speaks volumes to his commitments to all he graciously put his able hands and mind to. He also found the time in his administrative duties for other activities. Among these was a stand-alone accomplishment, with the full support of his loving wife Geraldine, carrying out the operation of the Club's medical aid project - no small chore. This included operational readiness of wheelchairs, walkers, etc. A large loft above his workshop contained numerous patient aides - all available for free loan for all those who needed them.
No matter what occasions, be it at meetings, travel to other clubs, or our own fundraisers, Bernie was a joy to be around and a precious friend, who would do anything for his family, friends, and community - always with great pleasure, and a funny story to tell.
He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
Rest in peace, Lion Bernie
I'm sure God has your chariot waiting for you to arrive.
Until we meet again
Lion Willie

Many good memories spent with the Smith family. Bernie, Geraldine have always been more like family. Crushed to hear this. He lived a boisterous and heroic life. Loved by many for being authentically Bernie. The image is the last time I got to spend an evening with Bernie, Geraldine and my mom accompanied by a few glasses of wine and laughs. Rest easy Bernard.
