Eugene Thomas Burden
1931 - 2026
Mr. Eugene Thomas Burden, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026 at the age of 95 after a brief illness. Gene, as he was known to friends, was born on February 22, 1931 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and was raised, loved and cherished by parents George Thomas Burden and Pearl Burden (nee Howell). He attended Prince of Wales Collegiate in St. John’s later obtaining a business diploma and launched a long and successful career in the airline business, beginning as a ticket agent and after a stint as a Madison Avenue marketing executive in New York he returned to Canada and retired from Air Canada as District Manager for Newfoundland and Labrador. He then undertook a second career with the Newfoundland Government as Assistant Deputy Minister of Tourism, and used his marketing savvy to launch a program that has helped make Newfoundland and Labrador a bucket list tourism destination for people around the world. He also obtained a private pilot license in his spare time and ferried family and friends around the Atlantic provinces for years in Cessna, Comanche and Yankee aircraft. In addition he was an active Rotarian, held a commission in the Newfoundland Field Regiment and was a member of Lodge Tasker no. 454 in St. John’s.
Gene was extremely fortunate in being able to woo and marry his childhood sweetheart and soul mate, Eileen Gladys Howse with whom he fathered four children, Dr. George Burden, Lori Carroll, Diane Burden and Heather Burden.
He retired from his second career in tourism in 1989 and spent many good years along with wife Eileen helping to raise a burgeoning crop of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gene was also a talented musician who taught himself to play lively tunes on the fiddle and accordion and often entertained friends and family with impromptu concerts when not regaling them with his famous stories…which were mostly true.
Tragically his beloved Eileen’s later years were marked by dementia and Gene attentively cared for her at home for as long as possible and later made daily visits until she passed away from her illness.
Dad was someone who connected with others. He had an incredibly kind heart whether extended to an injured animal or to a stranded passenger at St. John's Airport. He also had an amazing ability to fix just about anything and was still repairing items for his family and friends well into his nineties.
Gene was genuinely able to see the uniqueness of each person, through his ability to observe and acknowledge their nature, and to reach out in a loving way.
He was an adventurer, and fortunately for his family, we got to go along for the ride.
He touched so many people's hearts over time, yet always called a spade a spade.
His last days seemed so exceptional, because he was able to completely let go, and leave only love behind.
We honor the long and loving life that he has lived.
Gene was predeceased by his father, George Thomas Burden, mother Pearl Burden (nee Howell),wife Eileen, sister Helen Smith (nee Burden) and siblings Tommy and Mary who died in early childhood. He is survived by his four children, George, Lori, Diane and Heather, grandchildren Andrea, Suzie, Michael, Sam, Ellie and Ariana and great grandchildren Cole, Charlie, Max, Nell, India, Aubree and Nico.
Special thanks to the fine staff of the Dartmouth General Hospital and to his family physician, Dr. Jill Smith.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Ettinger’s Funeral Homes, Shubenacadie and Elmsdale. A private family committal service will take place at a later date.
