It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Gwendolyn Audrey (Brenton) Baker 81 of Stewiacke, NS, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2026 at Elk Court.

Gwen was born on November 12, 1944, the daughter of the late Keith Brenton and Audrey (Carter) Brenton of Stewiacke East.

Gwen grew up in Stewiacke East and knew the meaning of hard work at a very young age taking care of her younger siblings and her ill mother. She would develop many amazing skills that included having a spotless house, household chores regiment, cooking / baking, sewing, and making sure everyone was looked after.

Gwen would meet the love of her life Barry, from Shubenacadie and they would marry on August 1, 1964. They raised a wonderful family and had 42 years of marriage together. Gwen was very active in the town of Stewiacke being part of the Stewiacke Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the town Welcome Wagon, Stewiacke recreation, Red Hat ladies / Crown Jewels and many fund raisers that included anything her 2 boys were involved in. As the boys got older, Gwen went back to work, at RA Ellis Variety store and would finish out her working career at the Stewiacke Pharmasave retiring in 2012.

Besides being a wonderful mother, Gwen was a devoted grandmother to her five grandchildren, who fondly knew her as Gram. She became their babysitter, their back-up driver to hockey, ball, and many other events of course she would spoil each of them as much as she could get away with. Gram was able to watch all her grandchildren grow up in different stages of their lives and was so very proud of them all.

Gwen is survived by her sons both of Stewiacke, Brent (Jacqueline) and Mark (Nicole). Her brother Lee Brenton of Stewiacke East, sister-in-law Mary Patton of California, Grandchildren Connor (Chelsea), Cole (Madison) all of Stewiacke East, Cameron (Ameilia) of Bible Hill, Seth and Marley of Stewiacke. Nieces and nephews, Carolyn, Kelly, Wendy, Gloria, Sarah, Ryan, Jo-Ellen, Francis and Diane.

Gwen was predeceased by Barry (husband), Keith (father), Audrey (mother), brothers Robert, William, Malcome, Beverly Baker (sister-in-law), Tom Kiely (partner) and Tracy (niece).

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held at 2pm Sunday, May 3rd in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2 Shubenacadie, Rev. Larry Harrison officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home hospitality area.
