David Simon Nevin Obituary
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Simon Nevin, who began his journey to the Spirit World on April 7, 2026, at the age of 69. Born on June 13, 1956, David grew up here in Sipekne'katik.
From a young age, David was known for his generous spirit; he was always there to help and care for not only his own family but for many members of the community, never asking for anything in return. He carried the stories of his ancestors with honor, sharing his wisdom of our culture and history through stories and laughter. He had a great sense of humor and was famous for his ability to make others laugh; his many teachings often came through stories that were as witty as they were wise. His commitment to the Mi’kmaq language was a lifelong passion, ensuring that the voice of his people would be celebrated by generations to come. In his professional life, David served his community for nearly 30 years as the Economic Development Officer to build opportunities and a brighter future for the community he called home.
For 43 years, David shared a beautiful and devoted life with his wife, Mary McDonald. Together, they built a family defined by strength and mutual care. David was the proud father of six, but his greatest joy was found in his role as a grandfather. His 42 cherished grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren were the center of his world. He leaves them a legacy of guidance, laughter, and unwavering support. David was always there to offer love and a steady hand. He cherished family gatherings, and his presence at holidays and celebrations brought a unique warmth and joy to everyone around him. David’s legacy lives on through his wife, Mary McDonald; and his children, Olivia Julian, Shannon Sack (Robert), Kelly Oliver (Pete), Kerri Oliver, James Nevin (Jamie Lee), and Katrina Nevin (Robert).
He was predeceased by his parents, Rose Nevin (Barlow) and Simon Nevin; as well as his brother, Frank Nevin; and his sisters, Eleanor Brooks and Shirley Taylor.
He is lovingly remembered by his siblings, Eleanor Michael, Stephen Nevin, Wallace Nevin, William Nevin, Anthony Nevin, Jeannie Knockwood, Roseanne Michael (Curtis), Margaret Nevin, Shelia Nevin-Joseph (Gary Joseph), and James Nevin; his godchildren, Richard, Travis, Mary, Patrice and Casey; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will begin at 10:00am on Friday, April 10th, 2026, at David and Mary’s home, 453 Hollywood Drive, Sipekne’Katik, Nova Scotia, B0N 2H0. Until time of Funeral Service at 11am, Monday, April 13th, 2026, at the Sipekne’Katik Community Centre. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery. Father Phil Thibodeau Officiating.
