Jessie Elizabeth Whalen Obituary
Jessie Elizabeth Whalen
September 6, 1940 – April 2, 2026
Milford, Nova Scotia
Born in Pleasant Bay, Cape Breton, Jessie was the daughter of the late Mary Jane and Isaac Timmons.
Jessie is survived by the love of her life, Wayne Whalen, with whom she shared nearly 60 wonderful years .
She was a proud and devoted mother to her five children: Robert (Andrea), Michael ,Freddie (Linda), Greg, and Kim. She was a deeply loved Grammy to her 13 grandchildren: Crystal, Samantha (Zachary), Bobby (Heather), Christi (Brendhan )Deena, Mitchell (Samantha), Myles ,Matthew (Grace), Mark(Selena ),Brian (Cailey),Adam (Meghan), Brent, and Jessica (Josh), as well as 16 cherished great-grandchildren.
Jessie was predeceased by her parents, Mary Jane and Isaac Timmons; her son Michael; siblings Marcella, Alice, Fredrick, and Eddy; and her nephews Wilford, Frederick, Boyd, and Eric.
She is lovingly remembered by her sister Peggy and her brother Herman, and her cherished nieces and nephews. Fondly remembered by her Whalen sisters in laws .
Jessie devoted her life to caring for others, always putting the needs of those she loved before her own. Her kindness, patience, and quiet strength touched so many lives in so many ways . Family meant everything to her, and she took immense pride in each and every one of them. Her first and most important role was as a stay-at-home mother, where she built a loving home and strong foundation for her children. As her family grew, so did her calling to care for others. It was during this time that the Wardrope family entered her life and remained there ever since. She held a special place in her heart for Amy, Tim and Krista whom she loved as her own.
Jessie’s dedication to her community was just as remarkable. She began by volunteering at the Milford Recreation Centre, later taking on maintenance and bookings, and eventually becoming known as one of Milford’s most beloved caterers. Over more than 30 years of service, she prepared and served thousands of meals — from homemade pies to full-course dinners for weddings, meetings, and fundraisers. In 2024, the Milford Recreation Centre honoured Jessie and Wayne by dedicating a trail in recognition of their years of commitment and service.
Her role as “Grammy” was one of her greatest joys. She was an incredibly loving and involved grandmother, always present, always supportive, and always ready to make her grandchildren feel special. The memories she created with them will be treasured forever. Especially Chocolate Chip Cookies !
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to her in-home caregivers, Tammy and Marley, and to the incredible staff at Cedarstone. The compassion, dignity, and love you showed will never be forgotten. You made a very difficult time easier with your kindness and care.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Ettinger Funeral Home.
A celebration of Jessie’s life will be held at the Milford Recreation Centre on Friday, April 10, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with interment immediately following at Milford Cemetery.
