Michael Charles Haynes Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce Michael Charles Haynes passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at home on March 19, 2026.
Michael, who marked his 70th birthday on a hiking trip with friends in Greece last autumn, was a proponent and practitioner of active living, active transportation and fitness throughout his life. He enjoyed cross-country racing, marathon running and orienteering, was a YMCA aerobics instructor, and will be remembered for his intense enthusiasm for hiking and his work as a celebrated author of hiking books.
Michael meticulously researched and authored multiple trail guidebooks, including “Hiking Trails of Mainland Nova Scotia” and "Hiking Trails of Cape Breton." It was his life's work to share his passions with others, and his zeal inspired many to join him in enjoying and protecting these gifts.
Michael was born in Halifax on September 25, 1955, and was predeceased by his parents Joan (nee Miller) and John Haynes, of Lantz. He is survived by his son Matthew, siblings Dennis, Ann (Lockhart), Todd and Peter and nieces Amanda, Lauren and Elizabeth.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Ettinger Funeral Home. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a future date for close friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Hike Nova Scotia at https://www.hikenovascotia.ca/about-donate.
