Douglas Wellwood Obituary

Robert ‘Douglas’ Wellwood Obituary (December 8, 1942 – January 15, 2026)

Leafs Nation has lost one of its longest and strongest supporters. Robert ‘Douglas’ Wellwood, age 83, died peacefully at home with his family by his side on January 15, 2026. Known for his tremendous loyalty to the Toronto Maple Leafs, he would often be sporting their gear, defending their losses, and each year would end with ‘we’ll get ‘em next year boys; next year will be our year!’

He was an active and loving father, but he really excelled in his role as a grandfather. If they were swinging on a swing, he was swinging on a swing; if they were running in a race, he was running in a race; if they were climbing over 50 boulders at Peggy’s Cove, well, so was he. That’s what made him such a fun Grampie.

He was also known to be able to belt out a tune from his childhood at any given moment. He could be half asleep and still remember every single lyric. He enjoyed listening to the old country classics and found it soothing right up to his final days.

He had a rare and respected work ethic, having worked as an aircraft refueler at the airport for his entire adult life right up until retirement. He was also known for his strength and resilience within his family, having previously survived through significant accidents and heath challenges. Unfortunately, this last one was insurmountable.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Joanne; daughters, Kim (Paul LeBlanc), Jenny (Mark Stevens); grandchildren, Victoria, Brandon, Drew; step-grandchild, Tyler. He is also survived by brothers, Harold, Murray (Mabel); sister, Marilyn (Ralph); sister-in-law, Louise (Willie); and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by parents, Robert and Edna Wellwood; siblings, Patrica, Graeme, Marita, Myrna; and sister-in-law, Phyllis.

Special thanks to the palliative care team and especially the VON nurse that supported the family during his final moments.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Homes, Shubenacadie and Elmsdale. A family graveside service will take place in the Spring.

Memorial donations can be made to Bide Awhile Animal Shelter.
